Anybody have a 50 BMG

Anybody have a 50 BMG
« on: January 10, 2019, 10:15:48 PM »

I've been playing with the idea of getting a Barret 50 BMG. It's just for fun and they are pretty accurate so there's that part too. I know I can stretch all my B's out to 1000 yards with a little practice but those are my hunting rifles and I don't want to burn them up on the range.

The cable is out and I've cleaned the house and the garage so now I'm just siting here in the quiet thinking up dumb stuff.

I don’t, but a close friend and co-worker has had a Barrett for a long time now. He doesn’t shoot it much anymore.

I wouldn't stop at the 50BMG.I'd go with the .787.Look into the Anzio Ironworks 78 Cal.

How big is your spread in Nevada?

Get one. They area blast. I have the Armalite AR-50 AI with the 30 inch barrel. If memory serves it weighs like 36 lbs scoped out.Recoil is nothing with the weight of the gun and the big brake. Commercial ammo cost less than the bigger Weatherby Magnums. Heaviest bullet I have shot out of it is the 750 grain AMax.The Amax is a legal hunting bullet in most States I know of. Be prepared for everyone wanting to shoot when you have it out at the range and then they all want to keep a brass.lol

I don't have one, but a guy I use to employ has a custom made single shot, it's fun to shoot. But it's expensive, and hard to find ammo around here, he rarely shoots it.

Thanks for the responses. I checked into reloading for it and at least for a while it would be less expensive to buy ammo for it. I'm in the process of buying 80 acres out in the Nevada desert that is supposed to have a heard of speed goats on it and yotes. There is supposed to be a spring near the property with a small creek that runs year round. It backs up to BLM property and a Mining company owns the mineral rights. They are reputable and have a reputation for buying the property from the landowner if they find gold. I haven't been out to see the property yet and I'm still doing the "Due Diligence" to see if there are any hidden problems or risks. Pretty sure it's rattlesnake heaven but I can deal with that.

Have fun, but double up on the hearing protection.
Come and take it.

Ma Deuce was my best friend in Nam and Desert Storm. I couldn't even look at one for the longest time but time heals all wounds and I gained respect for it when I finally realized that the lives it saved dramatically out numbered the lives it took. The noise is tolerable with good hearing protection. The concussion headaches will get you if you don't pay attention to the signs.

Lucky Gunner has the AE 660 grain FMJ at $320 bucks per 100ct.(clean ammo $3.20 a shot) If you take it to a rifle range, after you take your first shot, for your next shot you will clear out at least seven benches on either side of you  ;D. The thrust that comes off the blast is quite forceful. Kinda like a back blast, but sideways. I was there that day, and don't know if the guy had a suppressor or a brake or what on the rifle, but the concussion was uncomfortable. It was a lot of fun to watch though, and his shooting was very accurate. Deer hunt demonstration:

Agree Danno, the Barret's are not a lot of fun to be near with that huge muzzle brake. I doubt I would ever shoot it at a public range.

Oh my gosh! If he really missed that deer but the energy of the bullet just passing it sucked the eyeballs out and killed it then that’s a new one on me!

That would be a new one to the world of physics too! Bullet went in one eye and out the other. He like most people (myself included) figured a 50 cal  would just vaporize the head if the bullet connected with anything but that's not the case

Finally decided to flip the switch on the Barrett M82A1 29" 50 BMG. I pick it up next Friday. I found plinking ammo for about 2.50 a round which isn't bad at all. I won't be reloading for this right away because I'd pretty much have to start fresh with all new equipment. I have to add another reloading bench to the gun room first.

I was going to buy one from GunBroker but with my Sportsman's Warehouse Military/Veterans discount and zero processing fee's ( I have a CCW) it worked out to be about the same.
