300 wby 178 eldx reload data
« on: January 17, 2019, 05:28:51 PM »
I just bought a 300 wby mag in the vanguard wilderness with the 26 inch barrel and topped it off with a 3-15×44 leupold cds. Im looking for a good elk load before i chrono it for my custom dials. I broke in the barrel with 180 grain select ammo. I would like to give the 178 eldx a try,but dont have it in my 9th edition reloading manual. Anyone have suggestion?

I would start with mid range loads for the 180 SST.

Back off you 180 load 6 grains then work up.

Lay the bullets side by side and compare their bearing surface. There's not going to be much difference. You could probably use the same starting load you used on the 180 unless you started with the book max.6 grains is probably overkill, but best to start low and work up.

I would think you could use the same data as the A-Max. I could be wrong but isnt the ELD-X just an updated AMAX?

Correct, the load data is the same. Actually, it's the same for all 178-180g Hornady bullets.

I went ahead and loaded up some of the 178 ELD-x bullets since i already bought them. I loaded 3 different loads with imr4831 in increments of 2 and the same with 7828 ssc I'll be sure to share  if anything good comes out of it. The picture i posted was groups from 180 grain wby select ammo 35 bucks a box. The difference between those two groups was a cold barrel and a warm barrel for those who wonder.

I finally tested some loads with the 178 ELD-X. The imr 4831 wasn't worth my time, but the 7828 ssc shot .78 3 shot group with 81.5 and .98 4 shot group with 81.7, 81.9 grains opened up to 1.2 inches

Don't be afraid to try the 212 ELDx either.  My 300 RUM really likes those behind Retumbo (or H1000 in a pinch) and your bee may be the same.
With your testing of 4838, how high did you go?  Tough to get a good case fill with that one unless you get into a pretty hot load.  There are some good published loads using 7828 with accuracy nodes between 84 and 85 grains.  You may want to push higher than 81.9 even if it opened up because it may tighten back up for you around 84.5 (watching for pressure of course).  That is supposed to be a great powder for the bee...

I'll be sure to try that. I also got some 180 accubonds. I loaded some with 7828 ssc and started with 83.3 grain and it seemed to have to high of pressure bolt was really stiff ejecting fired cartridge.

For anyone interested my 300 wby vanguard loves reloader22. I've been testing loads with 178 ELD-X.  I tryed 7828,4198,H1000,7828 ssc and finaly reloader22. With 79 grains of reloader 22 i shot a .67 3 shot group then loaded 3 more and shot .73 3 shot group i'm happy with this. Also i loaded some 180 accubonds with reloader 22 starting at 79 then 79.5 and then max which is 80 grains. The 79 grain shot 2.7 then 79.5 shot 1.8 and 80 grain max shot 1.1
