Long or Short action question
« on: February 10, 2019, 12:05:59 PM »
I recently have purchased a Vanguard Series 2 .308WIN and new to the world of rifles.  I'm looking to purchase a longer stock for this rifle and a question has come up whether it is a long action one piece floorplate,  a short action one piece floorplate, or a short action with a hinged floorplate??  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

The 308 is a short action. Unless you have one of the tactical models or one of the detachable magazine models, it will have a hinged floorplate.

Simple question to resolve this - do you have a mag which drops free from the rifle, and you load it, then insert it into the rifle, or do you load through the top of the action, and have a hinged floor plate to dump cartridges out?

I'm not sure about the vanguard models...

but my MKV in .243win is a built on a long action.

I would prefer a short action cartridge to be built on a short action, oh well.

Vanguards in standard caliblers come in short and long actions. .308 is the longest short action, 270 is a long action. Those I know for sure because I have both. I'm not sure about Weatherby calibers in the Vanguards but since those case lengths are all longer than a .308 I would have to believe they would be long actions also.

Some rifle manufacturers also make a magnum action which is a little longer than a long action.  I don't know if Vanguards are made in three lengths or just two.

I only have three Vanguards, a .308 Win, a .223 Rem, and a .300 Wby.  The .308 and .223 are short actions, and the .300 is either a long or magnum action.
