another MkV, but which one?
« on: February 10, 2019, 07:09:35 PM »
WN,
as i work through my used but new to me MkV deluxe in 340, i've been nothing but impressed with the fit, finish, and craftsmanship.  wow.  of course you all know this already.   almost makes me want to pickup another one, but which one?  the quintessential  300 Wby is just too close to the 340.  smaller?  mmmm i like the 9 lug action.  what about the new 6.5-300 Wby?  it's enough different from the 340.  the 6.5mm bullets exhibit some very high BC's for their mass.
however the 340 can hunt just about anything in N.A.  probably fine even for outsized coastal ursus arctos, though some probably have had experiences that tell them no such thing as too big.  and of course the 340 isn't normally considered for prairie dogs, but it should do just fine on all big game.  that's the problem with such a versatile caliber, how can you justify another for big game?  i see that Wby makes MkV even in standard calibers, and an ultra light.  however in an ultralight, i'm thinking modest caliber for moderating the recoil somewhat.  so for those of you that have a MkV and have used it successfully on all the big game you hunt, how would you go about picking another one?  i think i've been bitten.....
thanks,
tdbru

I have a 9 lug 6.5-300 Weatherby in an ULW, it comes with an Accubrake which makes the recoil almost non-existent. The noise and muzzle blast do require hearing protection, but the weight and handling make it the perfect rifle for long hikes or backpacking. Then again I have two 257 Weatherbys and consider them the perfect deer cartridge, so do yourself a favor and buy one of each.  ;D

If it were me I’d go for a 240 wby or 257wby in ultralight. It’s something lighter to carry and will be easy on the shoulder if your worried about recoil.

Both the .257 and the 6.5-300 are great calibers and will take anything up to an including Elk. However, if I wanted a rifle that was easier on the shoulder yet highly capable, I would go with the 270 Roy for a good all around caliber. I would have one now but I already have an extremely expensive and capable 270 WSM rifle.

thanks for the recommendations.  i see a lot of you have fondness for the 257Wby.  will the 10" twist stabilize the 100gr. barnes TTSX well?

You betcha. The 257 loves the 100 grain Barnes. I stoke them with a healthy dose of H1000.

.257 and Barnes bullets just seem to go together at the range and hunting.

Yes it does, the bullets are swaged in the free bore so they are basically stable before they hit the lands. I have the .257, 6.5-300 and 300. I would use any of them on Elk but I prefer my McMillan 270 WSM and if I didn't have that I would probably have a Weatherby 270 WM and it would be in stainless with a top of the line lightweight stock and really good glass. I haven't done the research about which Weatherby rifle fits that criteria so I'll let you do that yourself because that's when it gets personal.

Well I am with the other guys in suggesting the .257 be next.... However if you want a fantastic lightweight, light recoiling rifle that has plenty of punch for small and medium game the think about the .240 in a Mark V Ultra Lightweight. I have one topped with a Swarovski 4-12x42 and it is dynamite on the critters I hunt. Couple it with a 90-100 grain pill and it'll shoot flat and hit hard way out yonder. Then with the next to nothing recoil you can see your shots hitting.
