6.5-300, barrel life

This caliber has been out for awhile now. And many of you have bought one. Is anyone getting close to 1000-1200 rounds and if so what have you noticed in accuracy and velocity loss?

I doubt many of us will have that many rounds through the rifle.  It's a definitely barrel burner, but it also a hunting rifle and treated as such.  I want to say that last year I put 10 rounds through mine, and if I keep going at that rate, I'll probably be dead before the rifle needs a new barrel.  ;D

Yes I don't see many putting a lot of rounds through these. Mine is long range hunting rig so I will be practising at the range out to 1000. But even then I think 80-100 rounds in the first year to get the scope dialed and then 40-60 a year after that in my application. I always take several rifles to the range so its easy to get 80-150 rounds practise through 3-4 rifles in one day. I did find a post somewhere where a guy claimed he had a few thousand through his barrel! I think your 1000-1200 estimate would be pretty fair?

+1 to both posts. Mike, Using Mr. Swampthings scenario, shooting 100 rounds the first year and approx. 60 each year thereafter, you'll have to wait about 20 years to check the accuracy and velocity loss.  :) Cut that number of rounds in half and you'd have to wait 40 years. The 6.5-300 is a great hunting creation and design. Maybe using it as a target rifle, someone could find out sooner.

+1, totally agree. While I was concerned with the massive overbore of the 6.5-300, I quickly realized that I should not be concerned. There are probably enough hunts in my rifle to last my lifetime and whom ever gets it when I'm gone.

I agree with all posts so far. I was  curious to see if that was the overwhelming response and if there is someone who has shot theirs that much that could give a real report and not a guesstimation on accuracy and velocity loss

If you want Speed, Barrel life, and don't plan to shoot past 500/600 yards...

Get a .340 Wby and shoot 180-200gr bullets.

and all you need is 24" barrel.

Same Idea might be the .300wby shooting 150gr TSX type bullets.
