.257 weatherby??? New Guy here...
« on: July 26, 2019, 06:14:58 AM »
I am a big quarterbore fan and own (2) 25-06 rem.  I have wanted since I can remember a .257 weatherby but never wanted to pay the price for ammo. Well After shooting one at the range this past weekend I’ve got to have one. I am looking at getting one in Weatherby Vanguard 2 or accugaurd and wondering which one is the better rifle. I want 1” moa if possible out of either one. I want to hunt deer with it and wondering which grain is recommended. This weatherby .257 is here to stay I’m assuming. Thanks for all advice or feedback

The Accuguard is a Vanguard series 2, just a specific model in the Vanguard 2 line. Pretty much any new(er) Vanguard you find will be a series 2 and carry a three shot, .99” or less accuracy guarantee. Choosing an Accuguard over a Wilderness, or it over say a Vanguard SS, just comes down to personal preference features you are looking for. I know around here the newer Vanguard First Lite has been very popular here lately.

As far as ammo goes, the correct answer is whichever one your rifle shoots the best. There isn’t a factory produced .257WBY ammunition that isn’t going to be instant death to a whitetail. Personally, I shoot three different 257s regularly and in two of them I run the 110 grain Nosler Accubonds and in the other the 100grain Barnes TTSX.  But the lighter Barnes load, the Nosler BT and Partition, either of the Hornady loads, and even the WBY Select 100 grain Norma’s are going to anchor a whitetail DRT.

If you go the Nosler Accubond route, you can get the ones loaded directly  from Nosler for about $20-25 cheaper than the slightly hotter loaded ones directly from WBY. The majority of fellas around here run the 100 grain Barnes and swear by them.

Hope that helped a little. Good luck and welcome to Weatherby Nation!

Thank you sir for the feedback. So it’s just different Packaging between the Vanguard 2

If you plan to handload for your 257 Bee (I highly suggest it) the 100 gr TTSX and rl 22 (about 70 gr) is your friend.  3500-3600 fps and usually under 3/4 MOA.

All the same action. Barrels, stocks, etc will be different from one model to the next.

Are they pretty well built guns. Never actually seen one in person. Does the Accuguard have a heavy barrel? I see it say contour #3. One can only assume that a heavier barrel would be better to control heat between shots with the overbore

Vanguard are shooters, and I do not believe I've heard of one not being a MOA or sub-MOA rifle.  You are going to love the 257 Wby, and your 25-06 might end up collecting dust. :)  I've been shooting the Weatherby inexpensive 100 grs, spitzer, and my rifle likes them.   Good luck, and let us know what you end up getting.  Oh, and welcome to the Nation.

Yup if you can find some.  Layne Simpson suggested 82 gr of H870 with the 120 Nosler PT...Hint Loooong drop tube.

Good thing about the S2’s now is they come with a 26” barrel instead of the 24” barrel like the one I have. Mine really likes the 100 grain Spitzers and they are as cheap as your .25-06 rounds. My neighbor uses mine and it is a killing machine for him. I used the same rounds to “break in” my barrel and really liked the accuracy from them, though I have tried a few other bullets including hand loaded 100 grain NBT we still use the 100 grain Spitzers. Midway had a sell on .257 wby mag ammo also.

Well I just happen to have 2/3rds of a pound.

I also looked at my hand written notes in my Sierra manual and the most I've ever been able to get in a case was 78 grains and still be able to seat a 100 grain Speer without it pushing back out.I would assume that the 120 Partition is longer.

Yes 224, 84 of H 870. 215 forget the overall though. One range owner actually questioned it and micrometered the spend case it was within all specs. Primer pockets good ,in fact those brass were loaded 6 times and were better than the 7mm wby rem brass ( bought in the mid  90s) they had 80 grs for that charge and last 4 loads then lrt when fired. Those Weatherby brass are good. Full length first time reduce charge, neck size 3 times with a Hornady neck sizer before you had to full length and trim again.

I got an Accuguard in 240 Weatherby. It’s alittle on the heavy side but I like my rifles alittle heavier because it’s easier for me to balance on free hand shots. The barrel is alittle bigger with the #3 contour. The barrel is also matte stainless and fluted.
