Searching Load for .300 Wby
« on: April 29, 2020, 06:39:47 PM »
Hello everyone:

I got an old German .300 wby, with a thin 24 "barrel, it had a factory muzzle brake, after a good cleaning I got an acceptable group with 7828 and 165 Hdy sst (attached photo).

The barrel heated up after 3 shots, I got a shilen select match grade barrel and changed it, the length was 27 "and I installed another muzzle brake.

I am starting the search for loads, I have Accubon LR tips of 190 gr and Nosler Ballstic Tip of 180 gr.

I have IMR 7828SSC eIMR 4831 powder.

The 7828 has worked well for my .257 wby. also for the .280 AI

At the moment install a synthetic stock, I am repairing the wood, I will finish it with oil.

I appreciate your tips for recharging.

What works best for me is to start with a recommended powder that’s temp stable, recommended coal, .2-.3 grain increments 4 shot groups till I get 2-3 that are decent or really good. Pick one in the middle, maybe play with bullet seating. Chrono or shoot at distance for true velocity. Everything else I’ve tried has been a pig and a poke

I haven't tried the 190 gr accubond, so I can't comment on it, but with the 180 gr, with 7828ssc in weatherby brass you will likely end up in the 83-85 gr range for your accurate load. With Imr 4831 with weatherby brass, it likely be in the 77-79gr range for you accurate load. Just about every 300 Wby I've used shot well with those powder's in that range. But work up to those and see what your rifle likes.

No load data, but I wanted to say that the rifle looks good.

Also the previous load clearly shot very well in that rifle, so I guess your method of finding a load works for you.
I shoot cases with a belt because I feel the other cartridges need to pull their trousers up.

I've shot 3-shot sub MOA groups with my .300 Wby Vanguard with 168 grain Barnes TSX and TTSX and 180 grain TTSX bullets for hunting and 168 grain Hornady HPBT Match bullets for practice over 7828sc and H4831sc powders and CCI 250 primers.

Here's a recent target of 3 shots at 100 yards.  The hit in the center was the first shot from a cold barrel with a 168 gr Hornady HPBT Match bullet, and without changing the sight or aim point, the next 2 shots were Barnes 180 gr TTSX bullets that hit just above the 2" target.  Good enough for my hunting.  ;D

I have good luck with 180 grain bullets using H4831SC and Federal 215 primers.  Three shot groups are less than 0.75 inches at 100 yards from a 24 inch, thin barrel.
