I drew Area 16 (Shirley Mountains) for elk and Area 78 (French Creek) for deer.

Both are pretty good areas, but the Area 16 tag is the better one.

Good luck with your tags!
Have you hunted area 16 before?

I have not hunted elk in the Shirley Mountains. One of my hunting party members has (took a 6- point bull last time) and we know some landowners in this area, so we should have a pretty good plan going in.

Additionally, several of my co-workers have hunted that area and I知 pretty sure they will divulge some information to me.

I live about 40 miles from both areas, so I知 in a pretty good position.

Which rifle and in what caliber do you plan to use on this elk hunt, and which will you take for deer?

Great question. I知 probably going to be a little lazy and just tune in one rifle for both (I know...boring).

I need to scout the elk area a bit to see how long my shot may be. I知 leaning towards my Browning X-Bolt Pro Long Range 28 Nosler. If it looks like the shot may be longer, I may go with my 6.5-300 Weatherby.

The 28 Nosler is lighter, but probably only good to about 500 yards. The 6.5-300 is heavier, but it is built to reach out further.

Personally, my goal is not to shoot over 200 yards, but I have heard the elk can get a little skittish up there.

Not sure yet...

What model is your 6.5-300?

I read the elk are doing good in that area. Problem with a lot of private land mixed in the public, which makes some access difficult. But it sounds like you have that covered

My 6.5-300 is actually built on an older Remington 700 action. I purchased a used Remington 700 Classic in a 300 Weatherby Mag. I purchased an HS Precision sporter stock,a Krieger barrel, and a Leupold VX-6 HD scope.

I sent everything to Score-Hi gunsmithing and he accurized the action and put it all together. It is accurate, but not the lightest rifle.

Didn't you have a Mark V Ultra lightweight in a large game rifle?

Yes...kind of. I purchased a Weatherby Backcountry in a .257 Weatherby Mag a month ago. I could conceivably use that rifle, but I might need to expedite getting a scope purchased and dialed in.

I would be ok using a .257 Weatherby on elk, but I probably have more appropriate caliber choices. I知 sure it would do the job, however.

For of us drew Oregon High Desert late hunt. Did O.K. there last time. Hunts in November. Probably use my 7mm STW. Mark V. Have one in Remington 700 stainless also.
