In part:
" By the mid-20th century it had undergone a dramatic ideological realignment and reinvented itself as a party supporting organized labour, the civil rights of minorities, and progressive reform."
Politics in our country has been, ahh, interesting.
You can reinvent yourself, but you can't get away from what you are and stand for. During that same period of realignment (the mid-20th century) former Ku Klux Klansman Robert Byrd was voted into and accepted by all democrats as a democratic Senator. No one approached him and called him out as a racist, on the contrary, he was never censured and never publicly outed to black Americans as a Ku Klux Klan Member. The democratic party has always hidden or denied facts that define their party. The hypocrisy is enormous and the double standard that was blatantly abused between 2008 and 2016 by democratic Pres. Obama and his administration was shameful and in many cases illegal. We can go into the Obama years later, but for now lets just focus on Senator Klansman Robert Byrd who during the mid-20th century helped to "reinvent" the democratic party.
Anti-Civil Rights Record
Byrd's early votes in Congress reflected his roots in Southern anti-black, anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic teachings. Byrd initially denounced civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. as a "self-seeking rabble rouser," and he worked in opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, a landmark law that removed many barriers for black Americans. He also voted against the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which protected the voting rights of American minorities, making a 15-hour filibuster speech in an attempt to keep the legislation from passing. He later apologized for both these votes. (under pressure)
After beating out incumbent senator Ted Kennedy for the position of Senate majority whip in 1971, the second-highest ranking Democrat in the Senate, Byrd's name was mentioned as a possible Supreme Court candidate. His lack of law experience and his ties to the KKK, however, prevented his nomination.
All of this is history, and so is all of the Pork Belly spending the democrats have done for the last 60 years. They throw money at problems, and the people that catch it, misappropriate it and nothing changes. So all the "dramatic ideological realignment and reinvention" that the Encyclopedia Britannica says the democratic party has gone through since the mid-20th century is Just Words.
