270 weatherby mag rebarrell or rechamber ?

270 weatherby mag rebarrell or rechamber ?
« on: January 07, 2021, 10:25:45 AM »
I have an H series 270 weatherby nine lug I purchased in 89. I have used it and have considered a rebarrell job. I have just read an article dated January 2020 concerning the 27 nosler with a 1-8.5 twist able to push a 165 grain projectile. My question is will the bolt face on my action accept the .534 rebated 27 nosler cartridge? Has the barrel twist of 1-8.5 been tried on the 270 weatherby nine lug action by anyone on this site with good results in using heavier bullets? I also have read about a 6.5 / 257-270 weatherby by McWhorter? If I get to the point that the barrel is shot out I would want to see what options I would have. My thought is a Krieger or Bartlein barrel 1-8.5 twist possibly in 5r 26”. Anyone have any experience with a rebarrell in this configuration? If there is a blog that discusses this please direct me. Seeking to be informed.

Here's some data i looked at recently on bolt face sizing:

Long actions with a bolt face .Dia of .540 +/-
257 Weatherby, 264 Win Mag, 270 Weatherby Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm Weatherby Mag, 7 STW, 7mm Rem Ultra Mag, 300 H & H, 300 Win Mag, 300 PRC, 300 Weatherby Mag, 300 RUM, 303 Brit ,8mm Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, 340 Weatherby Mag, 338 RUM, 375 H & H, 375 Weatherby, 375 RUM, 416 Rem Mag, 458 Win Mag, and the 458 Lott.

Also i had a 300wby rebarrelled to 7mm stw last year when doing my research only 3 companies out of about 20 inquiries responded with a quote and interest. Bartlein was one and actually the middle bid and ultimately my choice. It was a 28" 3 contour with 1-8.5 twist. She shoots like a dream, however she came with a pretty big cost the barrel job out the door to me was just a few dollars shy of $1,200 bucks. Installed and everything for stainless barrel - so inquire and see if they will 1 accept the job and 2 what's it going to cost. Rebarrelling isn't always as cheap as it's made out to be when you go outside the box like your thinking here. Being that this is a new caliber i would suspect your going to have to hunt hard.

Me personally, for the 160-175 glass bullets i really wanted the 7mm stw was just diff and that's what i liked about it.

good luck with your decision;

I have 7mm rem mag getting rebarreled, 26" 1-7" twist. Will be perfect for me to shoot heavier Hammer bullets. I just asked Weatherby if i could order a 7mm Weatherby mag back country with a different twist barrel. we'll see. good luck. let us know what you decide and how it works out for you.

If you already have an investment in reloading supplies, I'd rebarrel to something like 1:7.5 or 1:8.0, #3 or#4 contour, 26 inch. It will shoot lighter bullets fine and be plenty for 165/170 bullets. GJ

I have a rifle in 257X6.5 Wby like McWhorter makes.  Mine is not on a Mark V action, but that would work fine.  The round has been a lot of fun and is deadly on deer with a 140 Berger VLD.  It is very hard on the throat!  When my accuracy declined, I started loading the bullets out further and got most of the accuracy back.  Before it went away again I had the barrel cut back and rechambered.  When accuracy goes south again I will turn it into a 7mm Weatherby.  My 6.5 barrel is an 8.5 twist Krieger.  I've had great luck out of them.

How fast can you run the 140 Bergers out of the 257 case?

I originally ran them at 3278 fps, but I ended up at about 3250.  In my rifle that is pushing it.
