Hello again,    please advise...  brand new vanguard 257.   Have not fired a round yet, barrel is extremely dirty/ greasy.  Is this something from packing???   Are they normally this dirty from factory??? Patches come out black..

New barrels are usually clean despite a factory serviceability check (and cleaning) before going to a retailer. Your rifle could have been a demo model and not cleaned before going into the shelf for sale. A good scrubbing with Hoppes #9 ought to make things much better. The #9 has a lead remover and copper solvent so just about anything in the barrel will come out.

I always clean a new rifle before shooting it. Itís usually surprising how dirty they are.

Welcome to the Nation. We've had other Nation members log the same complaint about brand new rifle barrels. Probably just a combination of test firing and and some sort of packing grease or oil mixture. Just clean the barrel like "eford" suggests and it'll be fine. Good choice in Weatherby calibers.

The last 3 rifles Iíve purchased have had dirty barrels. The savage was the worst. Just never cleaned after test fired. But even if not, definitely clean every new rifle as I would say thereís always a substance in the barrel and you shouldnít shoot it with it in there. Pretty sure they test fire for accuracy too so seeing a dirty barrel is a good thing in my opinion
