375 H&H Barnes Bullets
« on: May 03, 2021, 07:46:21 AM »
Gents, if anyone finds any 375 H&H Barnes bullets in 250 or 270 grains, please buy them for me and I'll pay you back. I'm planning on taking my 375 to Africa next year, but can't seem to find any Barnes bullets locally or on line.   Maybe you guys have a local store that might have them.  Not paying the stupid gouging prices of Gunbroker either.  Thanks!

I'm booked on a Brown bear/moose hunt in September in Alaska.  I'm going to use my .375 RUM and wanted to use Barnes 270 grain TSX bullets, which worked very well for me on a South African plains game hunt in 2007.

I had 3 1/2 boxes of .375 RUM's that I had loaded with 270 grain TSX bullets.  I also put a different Leupold scope on this rifle, and I used 1 1/2 of those boxes just getting the new scope zeroed at 100 yards, but I haven't shot it at any farther distances, which would be at least one more box of shells.

I have been looking everywhere that I can think of trying to Barnes 270 grain TSX bullets without any luck.  I did find some 250 grain Sierras at Midway which will work for initial zeroing at yardages and for practice, and I found some 281 grain Hammer bullets that hopefully I can work up a load with, final zero at yardages, and still have two boxes to take to Alaska.

My Plan C is that I have enough loaded and components of 300 grain TSX and Partition bullets to use one of them if I can't find more 270 grain TSX bullets or if my 281 grain Hammer bullets won't work.

I wonder if the pandemic, Barnes being bought by Sierra has anything to do with not being able to find any bullets?  Even Nosler are hard to find.  In a pinch I can always shoot 300 grs Accubonds, but too much for plains game.

Not that it will help you at all but I have plenty of 300 grain TSX's as that is what I use in my .375 Ruger and .375 Wby mag. I have some loaded up in Wby mag along with Aussie Made Atomic 29 copper projectiles. I plan on doing a comparison test between the TSX and Atomic 29's.

Oscar if it's only plains game then I would think the 300 grain Accubonds would be fine. They would be a match with the 260 grain TSX's as you usually drop down a weight when using the Barnes projectiles.

But I understand you wanting to use the TSX pills. They would be my 1st choice too.

Thank you gents.  If you can find TSX or TTSX that would be great!   But like the saying goes, beggars can't be choosy.   ;D

BB. I used Accubonds on my first trip, and they worked beautifully out of my 300 Weatherby and 30-06.

I have plenty of Speer 235 grs that I'm using for practice.  But as I get closer to the date, I'd like to practice with what I'm planning on using there.  I hope that makes sense.  LOL!!!!!

I'd talk to Steve @ Hammer Bullets. He usually ships in less than 72 hours. To my way of thinking "The best there is". JM

Like I previously posted, I ordered some Hammer bullets last week, and yesterday I got a message from them that my order has been shipped.

Previously I've loaded 270 and 300 grain TSX bullets in my .375 RUM.  The Hammer bullets that I ordered are 281 grains, so I will interpolate between the 270 and 300 loads with the powder that I have that is used in both of those weight bullets.

Other sources are www.gscustomusa.com/products.html  or you might try https://frontierbullets.co.za  both of these bullets  tend to have deeper hollowpoints than simliar Barnes bullets.  I know Nico and Susan personally they own Frontier in South Africa  and make very very  good bullets with extensive use on African game where they live of course.  You might have to go thru international distributer in the States Black Hills shooters supply if you can buy thru them or they even carry the Spartan line of rifle bullets.  I much prefer a deeper Hollow point cavity such as the Frontier Spartans.

Para,I started with Nosler data for the 300 gr Partition since I'm using the 299 gr Shock Hammers, reduced max charge by 10% and worked up. I've settled on 74 gr of RL 17 with Fed 215 GM primers in RWS cases. I did get up to 76 but was getting pressure signs so dropped down to 74. Firing from a back pack rest (?) I've put 10 shots into 1.5 inches @ 100 yards. I can use the same loading for 300 gr Partitions. Chrono was 2670 fps. RL17 is very similar to 4350 in burn rate. It's big advantage is it's higher density that gets more powder (by weight) into the same volume as 4350 in the 375 H&H case. RWS cases are a bit heavier than others I've used, mainly PPU and a few Remingtons. The 281 gr Hammer Hunters look like a good choice also. JM

I just ordered some 256gr Sledge Hammer bullets from Hammer. Going to work up an elk load soon. I'm excited, thinking my buddy and I will draw an Oregon elk tag this year.
