D Day
« on: June 05, 2021, 03:27:14 PM »
D Day is tomorrow. It's probably the single largest event in history. My movie for tonight is "Ike, Countdown to D-Day". Tom Selleck at his best!

I want a TV - cable channel to play The Longest Day. In 1988 I made a trip to Normandy. I waded into the English Channell at Omaha Beach. Even though it was high tide and the beach was only four or five feet wide, I’m glad I did it.
I think the troops who jumped into Normandy or hit the beaches there knew they were part of a huge, historic event. That part didn’t matter, in my opinion. Being there to help their buddies and defeat the German war machine with liberation of the occupied people was the goal.

Very unique brave generation.  Landing on any of the beach heads would be considered suicide mission today.  Those brave man had some huge cojones to do what they did.  God bless the few that are still alive, and God bless those who are hopefully sleeping in peace without the nightmares of that horrific war.

+1    From what I've read, there are less than 2,600 WW II veteran survivors left. (not sure if this is USA only)

I have "longest day" on VHS, DVD and Blue Ray. I know the lines before they say them. "Band of Brothers" is my movies for tonight.  When the 50 plus year old American neighbors asked why I had my flag flying, I almost kicked their ass! But, they are clueless democrats! This does make me think about the forgotten war in Korea.

My Dad was in the 6th Armoured div.
They landed 6 weeks after the D day invasion.
I do remember him making mention of all the dead boddies still floating and the smell.

I just remember my uncle Jack, USMC, saying how he was marching off one of those islands and seeing his brother (My uncle Frank), US army, marching on to occupy that island. Both are long gone.  My uncle Leo, their sister's hubby, spent the war in the USN escorting convoys across the Atlantic. My uncle Les (my mother's brother) died  as a bomber pilot over Germany. My mom called me by his name in her dementia. Guess I resemble him!   Good movie, "The Pacific"!

Wow, you can't erase that from your memory.  God bless him!

BTW, the pussyfication of American continues, not a single WW-II D-Day documentary on any of the channels.  Sad.

That is sad Oscar. I even heard the president failed to mention it.

I also noticed there were no D-Day movies or documentaries yesterday.

God bless ALL those brave men. My Uncle landed at Omaha Beach that day and he ended up walking all the way to Germany.  He passed a few years ago.  Not many left now.
