Off to Kaibab Deer hunting

My son and I are leaving this morning for our deer hunt in Arizona  North Kaibab 12AW .   We both have Muley tags,  we may stay for the next 10 fays depending upon what we see,  son is taking his Weatherby nation Members 257 Wby and I'll be using my 300 Wby,  with another 300 Wby as a spare.  Normally I would not  take this large of a caliber the deer are big and   possible long shots so what the hell.  We both have Mtn Lion tags  and we have seen them on prior hunts in this area.  I think it will be a mad house for thru the weekend and then settle down next Tusday or Wednesday after most people have gone home.  Not cold enough right now to move them off the plateau to migrate to lower elevations so we will hunt high at first and cruise around and look at different areas anyway got to go now son just started his diesel.

Just got back from 8 days of hard hunting,   we couldn't find a deer either of us wanted to shoot,  about the biggest deer we had a chance at was a very small  3 point with ma ma.   I really didn't see anyone with a massive deer,  I guess there a few decent 4 by deer taken but we sure didn't see any, although we did see 4 cow/yearling elk which G&F wants out of there and one Condor flying overhead checking us out. We hit most of the North Rim vista points to the Grand Canyon, side by side is totally muddy and will need a good scrubbing tomorrow.  I suspect drought, a large fire in 2020, and over hunting in general is not helping IMO.   The hard to get drawn for  late hunt should be much better as long as it snows to drive the deer down.   The local I talked with said they just weren't seeing the deer in the numbers in the past even a logger I talked with pretty much said the same thing.  I won't put in for the early hunt again.   Anyway got to get ready for a hard elk hunt just after thanksgiving on the South Rim this will be a hard hunt I think.

I believe a severe drought has more effect on wildlife than people realize
