AR-Style Shotguns

I've been looking at AR-Style shotguns for a while and decided to try out a Citadel Boss 25 shotgun.  I have been tinkering with it for the last couple of weeks and am fairly impressed with it.  I still need to finish breaking it in, but so far...I really like it.  I have only tried the supplied 5-round magazines and 3" magnum shells so far.  The magazines are a bit of a pain to load, so I ordered the magazine loading tool.

I wasn't overly impressed with the supplied iron sights, so I got some better quality ones with a larger aperture (it's a shotgun after all).  I'm also looking at an EOTech holographic sight for it...I think that will provide more than enough of a sight picture for a self-defense shotgun.

These things were absolute junk about 10 years ago, but I see the quality improving.  Not sure they've evolved quite to the level of quality we're seeing in most of the AR-15s on the market, but getting there.

There aren't many firearms I feel confident about having if a grizzly bear was coming towards me, but I think loaded with 5 rounds of 00 buckshot...I think it would finish him.  Again...more shooting and testing to do, but going well so far.

Seems like a good choice in bear country. There are some good sling options for hanging it around your neck and not having your primary hunting rifle get in the way. Like you said, you'll get a better feel for it the more shooting and testing you do.

danno50 - My hunting partner and I have discussed our strategy if we go into bear country to go elk hunting.  One would carry a rifle for use by both of us and the other would carry the bear protection and provide "cover".

I don't think we'll be heading that way this year, but perhaps next year...

I don't know a darn thing about Citadel shotguns I sure hope it works out and you know this run a couple hundred shells you are going to use to ensure the bugs are worked out.  My steel plate play shotgun an older custom Rem 1100 with higher capacity 2  3/4 " with  speed chute , briley ported on the front,  large charging handle, speed feed stock, smoothed up,  etc.  it will unload  shots faster then you can imagine, but it's heavy,  if I personally were to do what you are talking about it would be a simple matter for me to replace the barrel with a 21 " and screw on a shorter mag extension.  The gun is just reliable and soft on the shoulder.   Benelli M-4 is another fine gun.     I would look for an older rem 11-87  which handles 3" shells  in a 21 " turkey barrel, add some appropriate sights and I do use red dots, more than likely it would be an Aimpoint (rugged & reliable), keep an iron sight/bead on the front just in case, install a Briley ported choke tube rifled if you want to occasionally shoot rifled slugs or stick with a short range smooth bore choke.  That would be something a person would need to think about when selecting slugs or shot after testing to make sure it works to your expectations.  You could alternate slug, buckshot slug buckshot in the mag after testing.   In my case I would ditch the speed chute and large charging handle and leave it stock,  get a speed feed II stock, add a shorter mag extension tube and barrel / tube brace , and smooth out the transition  to the extended mag tube, and add sling,  it will still be approx 8 pounds or just buy a Benelli already set up.   Remington did make some short barreled combat semi-autos at one time, might be something to look at.

Just practice on deploying it in a hurry, both you and your partner! There isn't a lot of time when the poop hits the fan. Since this is what you got. master it!   :)

No doubt. I would definitely practice and have my head on a swivel.

I need to shoot it a lot more. I ordered an EOTech holographic sight to help speed up any quick shots.

I’ll follow-up with some photos once I get everything setup and it is tuned in.

For tactical shooting and home or bear defense, I could see having one of those, but right now there isn't one on my want list.

Twenty five or so years ago I did buy a black, tupperware stocked Rem 870 mainly so I could have a third shot bird hunting, and I bought a separate, rifled and scoped barrel for it in case I ever would want to hunt deer in a shotgun only area.

Other than that, I'm a solid O/U blued metal and walnut stocked kind of shotgunner.

As for sights on my shotguns, I've worked on the stocks on all of them so that they FIT ME, and the rear sight is my right eye.  They all have a middle and front bead thay I've blackened so that my eye focuses on the target, and not on the sight.

Honestly, I wasn’t that interested either, but it is kind of fun to tinker with. I definitely wouldn’t use it for any “sporting” purpose - strictly home defense.

I have several blued/walnut shotguns, but since these are improving in terms of quality, I thought I would try one.

Cool looking shotgun. Like Grouch said. practice with it until you're comfortable with it if it's going to be your defense gun! I'd test it thoroughly with the exact ammo you will load for defense, as semi-autos can be really picky what they will cycle reliably. I'm a fan of pump shotguns for that reason.
Come and take it.

All the reviews that I've seen on the Boss have been positive. The one thing that is mentioned most is that for surest reliability high speed shells must be used. Most say the recoil isn't too bad, but it's hard to tell how much might be absorbed by the AR's recoil pad and how much is absorbed by the shoulder. I figure you would probably feel it more target practicing than in a real shootout.

I’m continuing with the break-in process. Roughly 50 rounds of 3” mags and it is feeding/firing flawlessly.

Pretty darn awesome - it has to be the ultimate in short-range engagement. I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of it…that’s for sure!

I agree entirely. While I keep a handgun on me or nearby for convenience, my 12 ga shotguns are definitely the "go to" weapons of choice for defense whether at home or on the road. Anybody who has seen the devastation 12 ga 00 buck causes at short to medium engagement ranges needs no further explanation.
Come and take it.

I like heavy #4 shot.#2 shot would be a good middle of the road between the two.For self defense that is.Bear loads wouls be a different story.I'd probably go 00 buck then slug on every other shot.

In bear country I think it would be advisable to check out different kinds of buckshot pellets something harder and will penetrate deeper  i.e copper plated, tungsten (very expensive), Nickel plated etc.  do some penetration testing and see what you think.   I still would alternate slug and buck shot in the magazine.
