Ammo for Upcoming Hunt
« on: May 17, 2011, 02:51:49 PM »
I have a hunt in Argentina in a few months and I intend to use my .257 UL to shoot a large black buck and a medium sized ram.  I have been looking for ammo and I ran across the Nosler custom stuff. It is expensive (sort of) but it looks like it allows someone that does not reload the ability to get hand made ammunition.  I really like the WBY Mag 110 AB but the 100 or 115 BT would likely do just as well.  I am guessing the black buck shot will be from 150 - 300 yards and the ram from 70 - 200 max.   I am just wondering what ammo you guys would use for the hunt.  I think the 110 AB would be the best choice because the max shoot distance is under 300.  I believe 300 or over would warrant the BT.

I am sure the off the shelf weatherby ammo will also work fine as they use top of the line brass but having the date and hunt labeled on the side of the box is a cool feature of the Nosler custom stuff.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Aside from bullet construction, the thing I would consider first and foremost is... How does my rifle shoot each type of ammo? If my rifle doesn't like a certain ammo, then I won't use it?

I understand that the ammo in question is expensive, but how much does your hunt cost? The ammo is probably the cheapest part of the hunt, isn't it? Spend a little bit and try each type. The nice part about doing this, is you really only have to do it once, because rifles don't change their minds.

Good luck on your hunt!

Mike!

What shoots well in your rifle now?   If the 110 gr. Accubonds do, I would go with those.  Since you said the shots will more than likely be 300 yards or less, you should probably stay away from 100 gr. ballistic tips @ .257 speeds  ;D.

I would agree with Accumark about not using the BT.The 110 AB should do well.I am a fan of the Barnes bullets. As Mike said ,use the one your rifle likes best though. It would be neat having the Nosler custom with the date and hunt on the box.Who will you be hunting with in Argentina?

All of your input is appreciated.  I think I will order the Nosler custom 110 AB and then head to the range for a test round. I of course intended to shoot the ammo before I went on the trip just to make sure the gun, the ammo and myself all work well together.

Right now, I shoot 100 SP for normal west Texas hunting and they are as good as expected.

I am hunting with TS Buenos Aires -> http://www.tsbuenosaires.com/
Martin has been a pleasure to deal with and I look forward to the hunt. We will have two days of dove blasting and three to four days of hunting. We actually have spots open if others would like to go.

I don't know what the shipping requirements are, but you might check the .257 Weatherby ammo offerings on www.gunbroker.com. There, you might find something that is of interest to you if the shipping issues can be resolved.
