Ron are you going to the dark side? The force must be strong in James pulling you to the dark side :D I thought you were a 270 fan.

Derrill,

I see the .277 160g Nos partition is a semi sp. probably wouldn't stabilize at full sp dimensions.
Being Canadian I have the advantage of being bilingual, able to speak metric and standard. I think the mm. thing must confuse my American friends. :D
Its not the "dark side" its the "the great white north side"

I hear ya James. I just like to tease someimes. I think my next Weatherby will be a 7mm Wby possibly the 6.5 if it comes to production. I realy do enjoy your fued with duby atleast it is all in good nature. That is why i love this site there are so many wounderfull people here and all pretty friendly with a few rare grumps but this is by farr the best forum with the best people. Even the ones on the dark side or should i say the great white side. May the force be with you.

Derrill,

I have used the term " the usual suspects " when addressing the nation. We all know who they are  ;) This is a great thing we have here.
With me and Duby its all sh1ts and giggles when it comes to 270 vs 7mm. If my Dad gave me a 270 Deluxe things would be different. Or worse still had he not gotten rid of his Mod 70 300win in favour of the Wby I would be lost in the world of "regular calibers".
I  often wonder what my next B caliber will be. When I got my 257 that took care of the one that intrigued most from the Wby Guide. Next one has to be a Mk5 though. Maybe a Euromark in 300 or 340.

300 Wby and the debate about the 270 and 7mm will be over. ;D

Derril:  I do love the 270,  but it doesn't mean I can't be in love with three or four different calibers.    ;D    If I could only have one weatherby caliber it would be the 300 and not because I like it the most,  it's because it will do anything I would ever need in North  America.

Ron : We posted at the same time.130- 220s with the 300 Wby smoking them out there.None of us would be shooting Wby calibers if we were worried about bang for the buck with more powder for the best results.

Lets face it, if I won the Lotto I would buy one of each, love them all and probably still do most of my hunting with the 7mm and 257.

Once again, being busy leaves me catching up in the conversation.

James, the reason there aren't any heavier true spitzers in .277 is because they're not needed.  If it can't be done with a 150gr spitzer like the Nosler Partition or other premium bullet, it's not getting done with a 160-175gr, either.  If you look at SD and BC, the 150gr .277, 160gr .284, and 180gr .308 all carry roughly the same values.  In fact, it's the overall weakness of the .284cal that requires it have the heavier bullet weights to make up for it's shortcomings.  In life, we call that "compensating for something."

@Hunter - I'm surprised at the 3300fps 160gr loads.  Even pushing all the limits of real pressure standards, I find 3300fps with those more like a 7mmSTW (akin to the 7mm-300Wby), and probably well into the 70-75kpsi range.  How are the primer pockets holding up on those brass?

And for the record, I own a 300Wby, and yet I still prefer to hunt with the 270Wby.  If you owned one, you'd understand.  One day, even James will see the light and come back from the dark side of the force...

Duby,

you love to throw numbers around. While I am not going to argue your numbers, there at weatherby.com for all to look up. They show two wonderful calibers, one just makes smaller  ;D  holes is all.
Anyway I thought I would do serious number crunching to settle the debate once and for all.

7mm, 7 seven is the lucky number

284, 2+8+4=14, 14/2=7 seven is the lucky number

257, 2+5+7=14, 14/2=7 seven is the lucky number
2x5x7=70, 70/10=7 seven is the lucky number

277, 2x7x7=98  98/7=14  14/2=7 seven is the lucky number

Well no matter how you slice it seven is the lucky number. Math never lies.
