New Coyote gun

I use a 224, 240 and 257 for Varmint and Coyotes.  I only shoot factory ammo as I don't have time to reload anymore. I have also found that Weatherby ammo is more accurate that I can hold anymore.   Next purchase will be one of those fancy AR-15 Varmint rifles in 223.

Personally I shoot a Vangaurd in .22-250. It seems to work very well for me. My advise for what it's worth is any of the calibers you listed will work just fine, pick one you like shoot it a ton and you will be successful.

22/250 is best but thats just me,223,243 are all good 257 is a little much but will work.

gonna add a vote to the first response and say 240.  Just got mine for the exact use you had inquired about and I love it.  I have a MK V Super Varmint Master in the 22-250 and it has done well for me, but it is just too heavy and bulky for me.  I knew i wanted a new varmint rifle I wanted a MK V Ultra Light Weight.  If they had had it in a 22-250 or 204 i most likely would have gone with one of them, but now that I have seen, held, and shot the 240, I am happy they didnt.  This thing is a tack driver, fun to shoot and easy to carry.  Plus it will be the wife's weapon for any of her big game outings.  Out of all my firearms, it is fefinately in the running for my favorite!

My opinion, if you are shooting anything up to an including yotes, any of the calibers mentioned is fine. However, I'm not partial to anything smaller than .243win with 100gr bullets for deer. The .243 is very versital and economical to shoot in a number of bullet weights. 6mm Rem is a slightly better choice if you hand load, and 240wby is king of the hill in the 6mm line if you have the means to do so.

The 243 Win is more than adequate for the type hunting you will use it for. The recoil is light and it will stop deer in their tracks. I have shot 13 coyotes this fall and have shot them out to 400 yards with a 22-250, and as close as 30yards with a 270wsm would make my choice based on what you are comfortable with.

For a pure Coyote rifle as your stated purpose the 240 WM or 257 WM in ultra lightweight configuration is hard to beat - a 257 WM in the Vanguard would be a second consideration depending on your funds ( I would restock it ) - Nikon has a new Coyote scope ( http://www.opticsplanet.net/picture-1-nikon-coyote-special-riflescope-45-14x40-advantage-max-1-bdc-predator.html )out under $400 that would look nice on top of a rig. At some time you should consider investing an additional $150 for basic reloading equipment so you can reload the factory ammo after the first shot - or you can sell you brass and get about 40% of your money back. The Weatherby factory ammo is very very good and for $2 a pop a reasonable buy considering brass is over $1 of the cost. After all realistically how many rounds are you going to fire annually Coyote hunting. The 'ole time government hunters and trappers I knew swore by the 6 mm caliber for consistant predator hunting.

The .204 I use sometimes is a wonderful and flat shooter. However for coyote, the .240WBY is my main stay. I put one of my special brakes on it so I could watch the target after the shot. Alot of wamp with little recoil in this arena.

Thats a tough call i am not one that buys into the 1 gun for everything mindset that soo many people seem to i have my 257 for deer and antelope and i have a couple 220 swifts for 1 set up for gophers (zeroed @ 100 yards) and such and 1 setup for coyotes (set 2.5 inchs high @100 yards).I have been looking at the 240 alot lately i don't knw why but i have been using the excuse with the wife that my son thats on the way is gonna NEED it haha so we'll see what ever you pick should be whatever you want not what everyone else thinks you should have!!! good luck

All good answers. Thats the great thing about predator hunting. You really can't go wrong. I think only you can answer your question by applying a few more variables to it. Is cost an option? Ammo options and do you reload? Are you shooting in the East Coast, Midwest, or West? Do you have any desire to save the pelts? Do you really shoot big game and want an incidental gun or are you trying to focus on the little critters? Do you sit or walk a few miles - a 26" heavy barreled gun may be accurate, but it sure gets old after mile three!) I think you get the idea. No man should have to settle for one gun, so look hard at a big game round and possibly a 22 centerfire. Get a Weatherby and enjoy it!

My personal coyote gun is a 243 winchester and I shoot 70gr nosler ballistic tips in it and this caliber does a number on yotes and cats from close to far and has taken pigs for the pot as well.  I would recommend a 243 caliber wether it being a 6mm, 243 win, or a 240wby.  Personally I would love to have a 240wby in the ultra lightweight for coyote hunting but the 243 was more economical for me and the amount of shooting that I do.

I have been shooting coyotes and varmints fo a number of years, my favorite is a 788 Remington 22-250,  20 power Tasco scope, I just recently bought a Vanguard in a 223 and had it scoped, I will be using it in July in the high desert by Yosimite and I usually take a 17 cal with a 9 power wide field for ground squirel but I have used it on coyotes in lesser distance.....years of good shooting with all thes rifles.
