6.5 Talk expanded.... SUB MOA @ 1000yds

Went out tonight for a much anticipated long range session with the new Savage 6.5x284. Compared chrony results against mine with another chrony prior to shooting and I was 20fps higher across the board with a friends chrony after firing three rounds of three loads through each chrony. My 51.3g load settled in at 2838fps, ES=7, SD=4. Handloading is great ;D

450yds was a joke... 4 MOA up from my 325yd zero and I was spot on, so I only took 3 shots.

700yds was next up.. another 8 MOA up and I was now just chasing a tad of windage... 2 MOA and it was perfect. I hit a 0.410 MOA group... only two shots because we were rushing to get to 1000yds. I did however set my scope to zero at 700yds so as not to stress the springs in it with a 20 MOA base installed.

From 700- 1000yds I needed three rounds to get on the big steel. I honed the windage in and fine tuned the elevation to 12 MOA up from 700yd zero. Windage was 5- 6 MOA depending on the gusts between 8- 12mph. Once I hit the big steel a few times I went for my paper target for a three shot group. Back to a small 10" steel pie plate for a few shots.... walla- 5 bingo shots on the steel pie plate, and I could not wait to see my paper target. You can't exactly see .264" holes from 1000yds, but you can see the paint splash off steel at 1000yds.

When I pulled the target I was pretty pleased. Came out to a measured 8.450" group- which in my math world is 0.845 MOA at 1000yds ;D All the tears in the paper are shrapnel blowing off the steel targets next to it.

We now have 125 rounds through the Savage. I guess it's only good for another 75 rounds before it falls apart according to the experts here :D

10" pie plate @ 1000yds followed by my paper target at 1000yds....

I believe the record is in the 4" range at 1000yds......

600yd matches are 150 miles from my place on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. I'm orientating at a new hospital in the ER right now and I'm working those weekends through February, but after that I flip weekends have those Sundays open.

Up in GA they have 1000yd matches every month, but I need to look into those details and plan a trip with another club member to save on gas and lodging.

This rifle truly made shooting long range effortless. One other .338 Lapua shooter has one on order and we're going to order 4 Broughton barrels and have my builder chamber all 4 with a reamer we're going to buy.

Super shooting. This is nothing easy, but you've done a lot of work and it shows.

First time out at 1000yds with this rifle and I'm very pleased.

My builder called me at 8pm just like he said he was gonna to see how it went. He wants me shooting 6" clay pigeons next time out at 1000yds.

200 more pieces of Lapua brass arriving tomorrow will keep me busy ;)

Please share your load data.  I have a 6.5x284 that I'd like to start reloading for.

bullet
powder
powder charge
OAL
trim length
primer

Thanks,

Most of the data is on the target.

Lapua brass trimmed to 2.160", neck turned to 0.003"- 0.004" chamber clearance and 0.002" neck tension.

142g SMK seated 0.020" into the lands- that's 2.935" for me, but it depends on your chamber where your lands are.

H4831SC- I use 51.3g in my 30" barrel for 2838fps. Marginal velocity increase with 51.6g (2850fps).

F210M primers

This should keep you busy for a few days.... http://www.6mmbr.com/SixFive284.html

Just got my Savage model 111 LRH in 6.5x284.  Gonna put a  Vortex Viper 6x24x44.  Load is going to be almost identical, except gonna start at 49.5 grs. of 4381sc.  Should be a decent shooter.

The Savage makes it effortless at 1000yds. I'm not a pro, just a sportsman and I was pinging steel and paper by the third shot at every range out to 1000yds.

I'm thinking of picking up a NF 5.5-22x50mm from a club member. He bought a new (used) rifle and it already had a NF on it.

Here's a pic at 700yds....

Thanks Roger, Picked the Viper up used for $310.    Would like the Night Force, but a little out of my league.  Got a little under $1,000 in the package.  Should be a good long range deer rifle.  Probably will have it ready this week end, will post the results.
