Vanguard serials.....AGAIN?
« on: March 09, 2012, 07:28:41 AM »
Fellow Weathbyterians,
I have written a few posts about Vanguard serial numbers.  I can hear the yawns already.  Actually I would like some feedback from members who have recently purchased one of the last S1 Vanguards.
According to our best information, the last S1 models had receivers made by machining from extruded bar stock.  Indeed the S2 has a new serial range which helps us remember that.  The numbers which I have seen on the S2 model have a VB prefix with a six digit serial.  To help me remember, I think of the VB serial as meaning Vanguard Bar Stock.
What I would like to know is if anybody out there has a late S1 with a serial number that doesn't begin with VS.  The highest serial I have seen for the S1 is VS 393XXX.  I have X'ed out the last three numbers, of course.  Does anybody have a higher one, or an S1 that begins with the VB prefix?
   Your feedback will be appreciated.
your pal,
imr4198

Jimmy G.  we hashed out the bar stock business back a few weeks ago.  Might search for Forged or forgery and find it.  Also my three part Vanguard History.
VS404XXX?  Does it have the griptonite stock or the old black synthetic, etc.  Two position safety or three?  When did you buy it (roughly)?  Best wishes to all.

Many thanks, Yote.  I believe that dos0711 said he had one with the old stock and a three position safety.  Sounds like a transitional model with features from both S1 and S2 maybe.  I would like to know the serial numbers for that one....

Thanks for the info...I called and they told me it was a Series 2 with 3 pos safety and 2 stage trigger and simmons scope with a black series one stock made in 2011 for a special run for Academy sports. All I know is the rifle is accurate and awesome! I'd buy it again as the griptonite doesn't mean much to me...

I have not bought one, but have seen several at Academy and they had a green stock. It was a special run for them.

IMR: You got me a little curious now...I ordered my custom Vannie before the S2 was announced and got it around the same time the S2's hit the shelves. I never put much thought into it, I just assumed it would be an S1.

Pretty sure rather than being one of the last S1's it turned out to be one of the first S2s. VB000XXX. Now I'm slightly disappointed lol. 2 stage trigger, 3 position safety, that accursed plastic follower we discussed in another thread. And judging by how small that number is, as soon as they switched over to S2 they swapped the VS for VB. They might've had a few S1 stocks lying around they threw onto an S2 just to empty their inventory.

Can anybody tell me approximately when my Rifle was mfg'd.?  It's a Vanguard Sporter S/N VB200xxx.  That would obviously put it as a S2.  Thanks!

Just purchased a VB in 300 win mag and am trying to purchase a stock from Boyds. Are you saying that the VB makes this a Vnaguard Series two? In short actionhinged floorplate bull barrel? That is what the Boyds website is asking for? Make sense?
