340 Weatherby Ammo

1.    Hi all.  I’m considering buying a 340 Weatherby and was curious which factory ammunition you’ve all found to be the most accurate right out of the box? 
2.    How much difference is there between the various Mark Vs in 340 Weatherby when it comes to accuracy?  I’m torn between the Fibermark, Accumark, and deluxe.  I currently have a 270 WBY deluxe model that is the most accurate rifle I’ve ever owned.  I love the looks of fancy wood but it gets ugly quicker than other stock materials after a few bumps and scratches from hunting.   My main concern is accuracy and not appearance though.

Derril,  when I made the first post I didn't realize there was a place to post about rifles and another place to post about ammo.  So since I ask questions about both rifles and ammo I felt I should post both places.

Sorry bullet-slinger this happens on ocasion and just curious as to why. At least you answered this is a first. As for your question i  would buy a box of each and see what works best in your rifle. As for wich model is most accurate i would probly get an accumark. Allmodels are verry accurate but from what you posted i would get the accumark. Another thing to think about is will you be using it for hunting moore or target practice?

I agree with Derrill.No telling which one a particular gun will like best.You might google Weatherby Ballistics and look at the different bullets and weights and see which ones interest you most.Then get a box each of your favorites there and try them out.I am sure  all models will shoot much the same.I vote Accumark though for it's looks and the heavier barrel.

Hey guys.  I appreciate your suggestions and input.  I'll  more than likely buy a accumark.  (Maybe, lol?). If I was positive that a lighter rifle would shoot as well as a heavier one I would go with one of the lighter mark-Vs.  I intend to use it primarily for hunting.  I personally wouldn't consider a 340 Weatherby a target rifle.  Thats just strictly my opinion I know.  I'll more than likely but 3 boxes of Weatherby ammo to start with.  Something in the 200 - 210 range, 225 and a box of 250 grain ammo.  After I figure out which bullet weight the rifle seems to prefer I'll probably start reloading with Swift bullets in that weight range. 

The reason I ask what ammo someone has found to be the most accurate in they're rifle was to get a better starting place to buy very expensive ammo.  At least it's very expensive for me.  Over the years I've noticed that about every 25-06 I've owned preferred lighter than 120 grain bullets.  I believe it has something to do with most factory rifles would be better off with a faster twist rate to stabilize a 120 grain bullet better.  On the other hand I once owned a 257 Weatherby Accumark that loved 120 grain bullets.  I believe due to the additional velocity helping to stabilize a heavier bullet better.

I have no personal experience with the 340 Weatherby cartridge,  but would bet that someone who has shot one much with various bullet weights would have discovered their rifle shot one bullet weight better than another.  So what I was really hoping to do was talk to some fellahs with lots of shooting experience with a 340 Weatherby.

 I'm curious.  Do any of you fellahs own and shoot a 340 Weatherby much?  If you do, what have you found to be the most accurate in your rifle?

Don't own one but frequently shoot a friends 340.It likes 200 Accubonds.I wouldn't limit myself to Swift bullets though.

225 Tipped TSX from Cor Bon @3100fps

I think the 225 would be my elk set up and for most everything, then the 250 or 275 for really big stuff, brown bears, etc...


I have the MKV Fibermark, nothing wrong with the Accumark, but remember the accumark only has a stainless barrel, the action/receiver is not stainless! You could have ER Shaw build you a .340wby with a stainless action and barrel for less than a MKV in a semi-custom set up, which I would at least look into and consider.

If I had er shaw build me one, I would go stainless action and barrel(matte, not gloss), synthetic stock, 24-25" barrel, not 26", fluted optional... spiral might be cool.

the .340wby does not require a 26 barrel.

part of me would like a .340wby with a controlled feed action, so 1 other option would be to buy a Winchester model 70 in a .338win.mag and re chamber the barrel into .340wby assuming the action is long enough and cut the 26" barrel down to 24-25"


btw I wouldn't limit myself to the 200-210 and 250's, often times the 225/250's are flatter or just as flat as the 200/210 due to the higher BC's.

the 225 Tipped TSX has a higher BC than the 250 NP(the highest BC factory load from weatherby) so 225 Tipped TSX has higher BC and faster than the 250 NP!

Husky:You need to go back and recheck your BC values.According to Weatherby Ballistcs ,the Barnes 225 has the lowest BC of any of the bullets they list for the 340.

I'm new to this site but not new to the Weatherby 340 mag.  I am an FFL dealer in NE.  I have a Weatherby Vanguard Alaskan in 340 Wby mag I purchased in the mid 90's for big game in Canada.  When I sighted it in, I tried three different handholds plus Weatherby cartridges in 210 gr Nosler Partition and 250 gr Nosler Partition.  One set of handloads, using IMR 7828 and 210 gr Nosler Partitions, would put three shots underneath a 50 cent piece at 100 yds.  With this rifle and load I have taken a mountain goat and two moose in Canada.  In 2002, I took a record book moose with it in NWT - the shot was at 360 yds and the moose dropped like he had been hit by a sledge hammer.  My guide looked at me and said - "My god, what are you shooting.  I have been guiding moosehunters for more than 20 years and I have never seen a moose drop like that."  I responded - 340 Wby mag.  He said:  "I am impressed!"
That is the 340 Wby mag.  Earlier entries in this thread mentioned using it for target practice?  I, along with anyone who has shot a 340 on the bench, can assure you that you will not last long doing target shooting on a bench with a 340.  Plus with the cost of ammo, it will get real expensive real fast.  Thanks for listening.  Munnman
