Well I finally took the rifle to the range today to do some load tests and I was pretty pleased with the initial results.  I found one load in particular that shot dime sized groups so I will try that out at longer ranges and see how it does.

Here is a photo of the 5 shot 100 yard group

Thanks guys, so far I'm really pleased with it.  Troy, I'm using 142 gr. Sierra Matchkings with Hogdon 4350 powder, Lapua brass and Fed 210M primers.

Nice shooting. Any idea on velocity? Can't wait to see how that load does at 300 and 600 yards.

That's moving pretty good for a 260 Remington. Those 142 SMK's will go the distance at that speed.

Yes the velocity should be more than adequate to go the distance.  This particular load is using 43 grains of H4350, which from my research seems to be in the ball park of what many of the long range guys are using in terms of loads and velocities for this powder/bullet combo.  I started my load development at 41.5 gr and worked up to 43.5.  41.5 grains gave an almost identical group but I went with the heavier powder charge since it had a slight edge in group size, obviously better velocity and zero signs of pressure problems.  I'm assuming the 41.5 charge was the low node for this barrel and 43 was the high node.

I shot the rifle at some steel at 300 yards the other day from the prone with a rear sandbag and was able to get some half MOA groups on occasion (not every time though, I'm rusty shooting scoped rifles off of a bipod from the prone and need to work on my shooting position)  This Sunday I intend to shoot in a long range match (800,900,1000 yards) so hopefully it doesn't take me too many rounds to get on target and I can post some positive results)

What did she start life out as. I have considered this for a while, but was not sure how to start it.

Originally it was a weatherby vanguard SUB-MOA TR in .308.  .260 Remington is just a necked down .308 case so alll that needs to be swapped is the barrel.  (Same bolt will work) I had already swapped out the stock trigger shortly after buying the rifle a couple years ago.  The only issue with the weatherby vanguards/Howa 1500 action is finding a gunsmith that is willing and able to swap the gears out in his lathe to cut metric threads for the barrel.  They exist but just not as easy as finding someone who will work on a Remington 700.  I did try calling Weatherby too have them do it but they won't install anything but their own barrels on their actions.  Nevertheless I think it is worth the effort as the Howa 1500/Vanguard action is superior in design and build quality in every way imaginable compared to an out of box Remington 700.
