First ever spring gobbler.
« on: April 21, 2013, 08:27:14 AM »
After 25 years of hunting I called in  my first ever spring gobbler. I harvested him yesterday at about 7:30 a.m. His beard was 10 inches and he had 1.5 inch spurs. I was lucky enough to have my dad there to enjoy the trophy with me. I am hooked now.

The gun I used was I hate to say was a BPS using 3 inch #2 shot. I used a round slate with carbon stick. I was about to get up and move when he glided into our woods from the neighbors short pines and landed about 20 to 25 yards. I had been cutting and using a high pitch yelp with no answer and switched to a lower raspy yelp when he came in. The rest is history.

Nice un.  Nothing wrong with a BPS either, by the way.

Pretty cool and now you're hooked.   I wouldn't knock a Browning BPS  it's a very nice shotgun and I like the bottom eject.

I think the shotgun kicks more than most of my rifles. I was almost ready to sell it and be a rifle only sportsman. On a different note. After I took the turkey I walked over to it and gave thanks for the sacrifice that it gave just like I do with everything else I take. No dancing around no jumping up and down like you see on the hunting shows. Just respect.

Me and my brother are going to try and get set up on one this afternoon with the crossbow. By the way it is legal to hunt with crossbow here on Sundays. I also here that the insurance companies are pushing to pass law so you can use firearms on Sundays.

Nothing like getting out Hunting after A long winter. Even better when your plan comes together.

celtic, congratulations, very nice Tom!  Nothing wrong with giving thanks to the creature you just took.  I'm with you, and do the same.   I also thank God for giving me the opportunity to hunt these great animals.

Congrats on your first turkey! I also took my first turkey last Saturday! I never had time to hunt them before! 15 degrees and two feet of snow! what a rush! We can hunt turkey in Wisconsin in the fall also! Like you, I am hooked! I hope this is the start of many more birds for you and me! Mike

Congrats. If I ever kill a bird with 1 1/2" spurs, he's getting mounted!! I dont care how long the beard is.
