I all found out that the problem with my accumark is what appeared to be a damaged land section in the barrel. As mentioned in the past the rifle started off great i got it down to better then 3/4" 180 TSX @ narly 3300 FPS. Then the grouping became larger and larger. I ordered with the help of the Krieger rep a new Heavier #4 contour instead of the #3, also non fluted. He reccomended at those speeds i should be ordering a 1:12 twist instead of the 1:10. I just noticed that TSX and many other good quality bullets want 1:10 and faster. Has any one tried this slower twist in TSX or Accubonds, the rifle has been at the gun smith for some time and has not beed started as his wife have bad medical issues. If needed i will purchase a new barrel before he starts.
Thanks all
Tony

A #4 Kriger is a little big for the field but it does not stop me
Are you planing on sanding out the accumark stock or geting a Super varmint master stock to make that barrel fit?
As four the twist try posting on the Accurateloading forum (Gunsmith or target Shooting) lots of good guys there to help.

I suspect Barnes recommends a faster twist due to their bullets being longer per given weight. Bergers on the other hand recommend slower twists but they are catering to a specific match crowd. Bullet weight, velocity, caliber, bullet design all play a part of choosing twists. Rifle manufacturers have to split the difference of all the different bullets going to shot out of that rifle. Was there a specific reason to not go fluted ? I would call all the high end barrel makers and get their opinion. Ron

Hi guys, yes the stock should be OK as the #4 is only .040 thicker on average then the #3 contour according to Krieger. I emailed Hart, lilja and few others the ones that did respond all had different answers from the (1:12 is the way to go): too (dont use the 1:12). I sent them all the same info, bullets being used and speeds all varified with my crony. Most of them also including Krieger advised me, the more machining the more stress put into the steel so that is why i decided not to get the fluting done, it was not due to added cost I just wanting the best i coulld get. The #4 is only 3/4 LBS heavier then the #3, my water bottle weighs more then that. LOL
Thanks for the replies guys...

It's funny how you can get several diferent answers to the same question. The only reason I was asking about fluting was I came across an article for the life of me I can't find it, saying that along with what Krieger said about stress there was a possibility of some internal differences that may or may not cause accuracy to be not quite as good. There is another article on www.6mmbr.com/barrelFAQ.html . These are at the very top end match barrels so is there any real atvantage to fluting other than it looks good and saves a little weight for an average rifle, I don't know ?

Thanks Zonie, there was some great reading through out that article, about fluting, twists, and grove numbers.

I just measured the barrel on my #4 Super varmint master dem. is .826
and the barrel on my #3 Accumark dem. .732
diff .094
I also have a Mark V TRR with a #4 barrel it would be cool to put a Accumark stock on it. But I am not so sure it will fit, please let us know if yours drops in.

Thanks Warthog, the measurements i was given is .830 dia @ G section i believe near the throat and .630 @ the muzzle for the #3 and .870 @ G and .670 @ the muzzle. the stock was already been sanded to increase air flow around the barrel when i had the original barrel glsdd bedded, trigger work done, muzzle brake and the talley mounts lapped all to try and bring this rifle back to shooting great. As soon as i get it mounted i will let you know. I have kept better then a dozen targets from before, showing the steady down fall in accuarcy. I sure hope this new one will be the ticket
My 257 and 340 are both tack drivers but this 300 went from fair, to great, to very poor in no time.
Have good day guys

The numbers I posted are measurements from the muzzle, sounds like you got a custom job there allready.
Good shooting.

Actually Warthog I may have made the mistake on the original numbers as I dont have the rifle at home to confirm. I just went by what Krieger told me I had on the accumark. After I replied earlier I thought the original numbers seemed a little heavy to me, so I may have to have a little more taken off of the stock. The last time, the gun smith did a beautiful job, unless it was up against another accumark you could not tell the differance except for the actual clearance between the barrel. Krieger also said that the weight diff is only about 3/4 LBS, so it may be a little more. If it shoots like it did when all was good i won't care about the weight. Im 49 but not to toot my own horn im in great shape and all of my buddies and there sons who are in their 20's cant keep up to me. Even after a week long fly in hunt, LOL.

Happy birthday im 49 also, lets enjoy this one next year is a big one.

Weatherby's contour numbers are different than most barrel companies numbers.A #3 Weatherby is a # 5 from Shilen,Kreiger And Douglas. And on average Flutting a barrel will drop weight by 1 contour size.
