Looking to move up from Weathermark 30-06. Considering a Vanguard Meat Eater 7mm rem Mag, Zeiss 3-12x44 and Talley steel rings so overall weight 8.5 lbs.
I’m 5’8” 160 and looking for a carry gun with moderate recoil. No brake. Any thoughts welcome thanks.
A bit late to the conversation but,
If you're considering the Vanguard Meat Eater in 7mm mag (a non Weatherby cartridge) I would suggest moving up to the 300 Win mag. Using the Meat Eater rifle for both calibers the difference in recoil, is a moderate increase of about 9 lbs which really isn't that much, unless you're recoil sensitive? The difference in recoil between the 30-06 and the 300 is 13 lbs. I did the calculations using Hodgdon Reload data using min. charges for both calibers, using the same type powder and same bullet weights. You can always add a slip on recoil pad for range work if necessary, but I doubt you'd notice it in the field. A big advantage in the 300 Win Mag over the 7 mag is that it has about as many bullet choices as the 30-06. Under "normal circumstances", 300 win mag ammo can be found almost anywhere in the hunting world. You would almost never be under gunned, except for the Big Bears and the Big 5. JMO
