Anyone hunt whitetails in Ohio? I plan on hunting new lease this year in Ohio. I have a 12 gauge semi-auto slug gun but would prefer to hunt with a rifle. This is new to me...any experience with this this type of rifle...any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Not Ohio but Pennsylvania. In years long ago I had a Marlin lever gun in 444 Marlin.  It's straight walled.  I killed several whitetails with it.  It flat stomps them! 45/70 Govt. is another I would recommend.  Love those big bores!

I have couple of Model 94 .375 Big Bores that are straight wall.  Love those rifles. Very easy to handle.  They were post ‘64, but all forged steel and walnut with great bluing.  Should be able to find them around.

Didn't they recently come out with some cartridges for these type of seasons?

I wouldn't look past that savage 220 in 20ga, I use to shoot 12ga semi auto slugs.... and this 20ga savage is pretty sweet!

not sure the 460 sw is legal in ohio but that's a quick one....

Winchesters 350 Legend was developed specifically for areas where straight walled cartridges are permitted.  A friend who lives in MI and hunts his own property in the southern part of the state uses the .350 Legend.  He claims DRT on 5 whitetails so far.

Find the ammo before deciding on a new caliber rifle. The 458 calibers might be easiest. Hope your not recoil sensitive!   :)

Isn’t Marlin that makes one in 44 mag. I thought it would be good for close range hunting.

Henry makes them, also. Browning made them in the past as well. Finding the ammo right for hunting might prove to be difficult. It's not much different than a 12 gauge slug for distance.  :)
