Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Re: Side Focus Scopes
« on: November 10, 2025, 05:42:52 PM »
My input is from shooting paper.  I don’t hunt any longer but I’m still on the bench a couple times a week.  For bench work I like the side focus much better than the old front adjustment.

The Glock report is not exactly correct.  The correct story is easy to find with any search engine.

The added benefit of killing pigs is feeding the protected birds (buzzards).

Williams called.  They cannot match the old pad; the alternate plan is to use the pad currently in use by Weatherby and they will return the old one for my record.

The 1962 date for the caliber is a solid piece of the puzzle along with the serial number requirement in late 1968.  Date is narrowing down.

Thank all

My local gun shop is a haven for estate finds.  They also specialize in antique firearms.  Guns without serial numbers is not uncommon.  A well established retired probate judge owns the shop.  This brings in healthy estate collections.

So it seems I have a pre serial number 7 mm RemMag with a HOWA proof mark, made in Japan.
The bolt release has been identified as Sako and it had an old style Weatherby recoil pad on a Weatherby looking stock.  I guess it’s just an attractive old step child. When the stock comes home I’ll see how it shoots.

Found a stash on Accurate Shooter and sprung for a few from Nosler.  GunBroker was a stacked deck.

Thanks

I would like to find/buy a hundred or so pieces.  Nosler would be nice but I am open.

Thanks, Gary

Rifles / EARLY 7mm REMMAG WITH WEATHERBY STOCK
« on: December 27, 2024, 03:33:54 AM »
http://Another of my vintage rifles believed to have Weatherby heritage is next up on my super cleaning/research agenda.  I’m not having a lot of photo posting success from the iPad; I’ll have a go at it from a desktop later.

The rifle has the grip cap diamond and spacers on the cap and fore stock.  The recoil pad is marked Weatherby and is out for replacement.  Williams Gunsights will do that work.

The rifle is marked Japan on one side and 7mm REMMAG on the opposing side.  The gun was manufactured prior to serial number requirement.  The rifle arrived at my local gun shop from a multiple South Gate Weatherby estate collection. Not true evidence but gives cause for the Weatherby connection.

The rifle bore is in great condition and came sterile clean with little effort. The high gloss stock will be back to glory with the new pad.

Open to opinions and input.  Proof and pad photos added

Rifles / Re: NEW STOCK FOR 375 HH
« on: December 26, 2024, 01:53:50 AM »
The 375 is in temporary hold.  I was able to secure the stock/barrel by delaying the trigger guard /floor plate install.  I’ll find the screw I need and finish the project.  Meanwhile on to the 7mm, and new thread.

1.1.25 update:

McMaster-Carr had 2 inch 1/4-28 in a button head cap screw black.  In preparation to cut the over length, I ran the screw in.  When I tightened it the stock pulled in just a bit more.  I removed the new 2 inch screw and reinstalled the OEM screw and all is good.  Thanks to McMaster, the project is done and the gun is ready for glass.

I now have 10 of those 2 inch screws (minimum order). I consider them to be Weatherby stock tools.
If anyone would like to have one in their special purpose tool box, let me know. I’ll never need 10.

Is the verification for each post forever or just because I’m a new guy?

Rifles / NEW STOCK FOR 375 HH
« on: December 24, 2024, 04:32:34 PM »
Working through several older Weatherby rifles I bought earlier 2024, I decided I could not sleep with the plastic stock on  Mark V s/n H240517 marked 375 HH.  Fortunately for me the great folks at Weatherby were able to provide a new high gloss wood stock.  I have had this project in the “later” mode for too many months.  Over the past several days I have cleaned the barrel to factory clean and moved on with mating the Steinway wood to the action.  All is good except the rear stock screw is too short by about .25 inches.  The existing screw measures 2.5 inches not including the button head. The action is properly seated.  I rechecked the old plastic stock and the threads do reach but would never pass FAA aircraft captured thread count.  I would prefer to purchase over length and cut them to fit.  I want matching slot heads, does anyone know of a source for 1/4x28 2 inches matching screws?

Thanks Gary

Rifles / Vintage Deluxe Stock Mark V in 308
« on: December 18, 2024, 07:58:11 PM »
So how many years will it take me to find one.

P271:  Btwn 1958-1959 South Gate production issued 1224 s/ns. Some were 308 plus 15 other calibers. I just need to find one of the needles in the old haystack.

Thanks folks at Weatherby for helping reset my access.  I tried everything I knew for numerous times.
Every person at Weatherby is great.  When I call, I can tell they want to be at work!  THANKS
