Ammo / Re: Hornady 110 Grain ELDX
« on: June 21, 2019, 11:13:43 AM »
I'll be trying these out in my .257 next deer season, but I can't help but wonder why Hornady down-loads the .257 Wby Mag (as compared to Weatherby factory loads)?

I'm hopeful that soon there will be a hunting bullet with a G1 BC in the .5XX range, which would really help us out at the longer ranges.

The limiting factor is the 1 in 10" twist. There are custom bullet makers like Blackjack bullets that make high BC bullets. They do require a 1 in 8" to 1 in 7" twist to shoot them. It will put the 257 in the same group as the 6.5mm based cartridges.

Ammo / Re: .257 Wby, Bullet 85 gr for deer?

The 85 grain Ballistic Tip is a little light for all tasks, as it was made to be a Varmint bullet. You would be okay with a broadside hit. If you by chance smash a shoulder, it may be an ugly wound. At least step up to the 100 grain ballistic tips. I would recommend the 100 TTSX from Barnes or the 110 Acubonds.

Elk / Re: need an opinion on best .300 wby bullets for elk

Live in AZ and I've killed 3 elk just fine with a 180 Ballistic Tip backed by RL22, two cows and 1 bull. The bullet performed perfectly in all cases.
