Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Kershaw customer service
« on: April 29, 2015, 05:57:38 PM »
A while back I managed to snap the tip off of my little Kershaw knife. It was a nice  little RJ Martine design and I was pretty bummed about it so I called them up to see if they had a blade for it.  They say yes and I fill out the repair ticket send it in going to cost me 10 bucks plus shipping.  So off it goes and I don't hear any thing back from them no big deal I am pretty busy I didn't really think about it for a while until the other day and realized it had been two months.  So I shoot them an email see what's up.  They send me one back apologizing for the delay and telling me that they don't have any parts for it.  They gave me voucher good for 65 dolled toward a new knife, sent me the link to the website with the 800 number said to call up when I see one I like and they would ship it out.  Well the knife I wanted was 80 bucks.  They paid the difference and the shipping.  I was initially a little irritated about the situation but to their credit they made it right.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Old Rifleman magazines
« on: February 26, 2015, 06:08:45 AM »
Guys I have a stash of old American Rifleman magazines that have been sitting here gathering dust a long time. I have some full years from the 30s-60s one even has an article by John Garrand on how to tune the rifle he invented for camp perry matches. Very cool stuff. If anybody is interested let me know.

I just got an email about this tuff being on sale.  Unless they are paying you to take it off their hands I'd stay far away from it.  I bought 500 a while back and ended up pulling the bullets out of most of them and using the brass.  They wouldn't cycle my Colt or S&W. The ranch rifle would eat them but they didn't shoot worth a darn. The ones I pulled the bullets out of had 27 grains of some type of ball powder in them.  Maybe in the tropics or the desert they would work dunno.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Goofy game laws

So I was wondering if any of you have them in your state like we do in mine?  Pa.
Here are a few that I never quite got.  No Sunday hunting, unless you are hunting crows or foxes.  Makes sense right?  No semi auto for deer but you can use a semi auto shot gun for small game but not a semi auto .22.  Any center fire .22 and up is legal for deer, so break out granddads old hornet and have at it.  we have a couple of muzzle loader seasons. An early one in Oct that you can use any flavor you like including inlines, that's a doe only season. Then we have a late season after Christmas into mid January that you have to use a flintlock only. Round lead balls and no sabots or power belts etc.  Oh but the bow hunters can use a scoped cross bow now.  Good news is I have an excuse to buy a flintlock and a cross bow now. ;D

So Ron's last post on the long range hunting topic got me to thinking, for an old school guy or what I thought was an old school guy, a lot of tech has managed to creep into my gear.  When I was a kid the list of gear was a 30-30 of some flavor maybe with a scope if I got lucky maybe not, a knife and a rope and a flashlight.  That was about it and I put a pretty fair amount of Pa whitetails in the freezer with really no more tech than my grandfather would have had in the 40's.  But now I have to confess I carry or have used Laser range finders, GPS, GMRS radios. My loading bench has a digital powder dispenser and I have a chronograph   All gadgets that I use and really enjoy for the most part. Synthetic stocks and short mags have found their way into my safe and while I do love a pretty wooden stocked rifle I have to say that the Accumark I have is my favorite rifle ever at least so far.  So I guess I use more tech than I used to but it's funny I don't seem to shoot any more deer.  How bout you guys?

I'm thinking about rebarreling my 6mm Rem to a 6.5 creedmoore or maybe a 6.5x55.
The rifle is a Ruger 77MKII.  The limiting factor will most likely be what will feed from the magazine.  I already have a 7-08 and a 308.  I have also toyed with the idea of a 260 because at least it's based on the 308 so brass wont ever be an issue like my 6mm is getting to be.  I'm mainly going to set it up as a casual target rig that will get used for deer a bit here and there. What do you folks who have a 6.5 creedmoore think about them?

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Old Leupold question M8 10x
« on: March 15, 2014, 08:24:43 AM »
I have an old M8 here that I have used on my 222mag and it's been a good one.  It has fine duplex crosshairs in it.  What my question is, how well do the old friction adjusters hold up if you dial them up and down a lot for elevation and how repeatable are they?  I guess it wouldn't be a huge number of times probably 10 times a week if it ever stops snowing here long enough to actually get it over a bench.
Thanks

I have recently been given a chance to give something back to the hobby/sport of rifle shooting by coaching kids on a Jr bench rest team at my local club.  I think it's going to be a blast we are going to start them out with 22s then move up to probably 22-250s and we have a new 6mmBR from Savage for some 1000 yard shoots this summer. I'm thinking I need to pick up a good bolt action 223 too and I'd be real curious to see if Weatherby would be up for a club discount on a couple of VG varmint rifles?  The 22lr we borrowed from another club and the 22-250s are some that guys are willing to use for this so we'll use them.  My old 722 custom will get some use too I think because it will shoot 1/3 MOA out to 300 yards at least.  Any way should be a good time and If any of the Weatherby guys can help us out let me know.  We looking for corporate sponsors too hint hint.   Never hurts to ask right. I hate to see Savage get all the glory.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / 6mm Rem brass from 7x57
« on: February 27, 2014, 07:30:37 PM »
Hey guys, I'm having a hard time finding any 6mm Rem brass and thinking about necking some 7x57 down and using that.  I'd use 257 Roberts but can't find that either. My question is the neck thickness going from 7 to 6 mm. I have an outside neck turning tool but I don't have an inside tool am I going to need one?  If you haven't actually done this before please spare me the deep theoretical thoughts and pontifications. I just want the facts like Joe Friday. Thanks

I went to three local non chain mom and pop places yesterday and one retard chain store also. There were people lined up buying guns or trying to anyway. All the pnone lines for the state instant check were busy. It looked like lots of hand guns being sold. I managed to find some small rifle primers and a box of Sierra 69 gr match hollowpoints that I was looking for so I'm happy. Still haven't run across any BLC-2 yet but no problems getting 748.  Brass for 223 is long gone though.  I did pick up some Alliant Power Pro Varmint.  I have never used it but it has some good reviews and is supposed to be real close to old Reloader 12 so we will see.  I might end up with a new load I like out of al this mess who knows.  The mood in the stores was one of quite urgency.  I have to tell you guys I didn't care for it much.  It's not a good vibe at all.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Old Herters brass for 244
« on: October 21, 2012, 06:47:31 PM »
I have a few boxes of Herters 244 brass that I'm going to use I think since I'm not a collector of things like that.  Never loaded still in the boxes made by norma I think and better brass than I can get for it without making it from some other 7x57 brass. My question is has anybody ever heard of old brass getting brittle sitting around?  As far as I know you have to work harden it to make it do that.  I have loaded up a few of these and fired them with no issues so I'm thinking it's pretty much some internet BS.  Oh and If any of you guy do collect stuff like that I'd trade those boxes for some new Winchester brass for the 6mm.
Shoot me a pm

So for a while now I have wanted to get down to maybe three powders for rifle and two for pistols and I think I have made my call on what powder.  I load for for 222 Mag and 223, 6mm Rem 7-08, 308, 270 WSM and 7 Rem Mag. and 44 mag and special on the handgun side.  After looking over my loads and what I have had good luck with over the years I think I can get by just fine with.  BLC-2 for the 222 mag,223 and 308 and IMR 4350 for the 6mm and 7-08 and the 7 Rem Mag. I also use RL-22 in the 270 WSM and the 7 Rem Mag. I'm sure IMR 4350 would work well in the 270 WSM also just haven't played with it yet with this rifle. On the handgun side I am going with 2400 and H110. Thoose two have done everything I have ever needed to do with my 44s.   Any of you ever give any thought to thinning out the powder heard too?
