I haveca neighbor that has at least 8 cats. And they have a dog door for them to come and go.
There basically Ferrell cats. It gets them from the animal shelter and if they stick around there his pets. I have put up with them fir years.  But it's gotten way out of hand. Any dirt on my property is just a litter box.  My boat whis was stored in a tent style boat house was covered with muddy cat trscks and the carpet with matted cat hair. I have hundreds of pics of them on trail camera.  And called the city. But there is nothing legal you can do. As s there is no limit to the amount of cats you can have and there not restricted to thete property like dogs. I don't want to to kill them just discouraged them from my property.
I've tried peppermint oil with some success.  But it dosent work in winter. Anybody have good methods for keeping cats away ?

Today I tested my Glock 20  / 10 mm with  a 200 gr.  Swift A Frame I shot into 7 gallons of water back to back. It poked a hole into the 6th gallon of water but was recovered in the 5th gallon.
It weighed 199.7 upon recovery. And mushroomed as expected.  Very happy with the results.  No need to buy a special barrel to shoot Hard caste lead. The Swift A Frame will do the job.
10 mm on the left 44 mag on the right. 250 gr. Partion. Recovered in the 6th gallon of its test.

I mounted my scopes today on my 340 and 300 Weatherbys. They are the same Rifle with slightly different scopes and a different hinged floor plate. But look very similar.
It reminded me of a Jim Zumbo hunting trip on his TV show. His show was sponsored by Remington.  And he had a 300 and 338 Ultra Mags that were identical in appearance.
He was mule deer hunting out west and had brought the 338 but had ammo for the 300. Honest mistake.  But had to make a last minute long drive to find some 338 Ultra mag ammo.
Needless to say it flattened the mule deer.
Just wondering if anyone has done the same thing?

I always seem to arrive at the party late.
I didn't even know that Hodgdon had a annual manual you could buy for $12.99
Naturally it's only for there powders.  But they own several brands now. And it's the only manual  that I have ever seen with loads for H 4350 side by side with IMR 4350 with all things being equal.  It does not give you a huge selection of bullet options.  Some will just say for the 300 Weatherby  180 gr. BTSP then give you the data.
But I think it's a Great Manuel for the price.

Before I send away for my custom dials . I was wondering how much does Elevation effect performance? My home state of MI has a avg Elev of 550 ft. Newfoundland is 2700 ft. And WY is 6700 ft. Is it wise to go with A mid way Elev.of say 4000 ft ?
And does anyone have experience with them just how accurate are they ?
Thank You

I got a good deal on a Leupold VX6HD 2 - 12 today. I'm going to put it on my 300 wby and put the VX5HD 2-10 on my 340 I have always had Leupold std bases and rings on the 340 but I was thinking now is the time to get something a little Beefier.  Just wondering what you guys with the Big Weatherbys use for basses and rings ?
Thank you

I remember looking through the old gun catalogs at the cartridge velocities.  One that always stood out was the 30-06 accelerator I believe it was listed at 4080 fps at the muzzle.
I see where a guy on the Weatherby FB blog has loaded a 30-378 with one. He's guessing it to shoot at 6000 fps. Hope it works for him. But I wouldn't want to be near him when he test it.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Pros and Cons of Muzzle Breaks ?
« on: December 26, 2024, 10:43:01 AM »
I recently changed my bosses trigger on his Tem 700 in 300 wby. It cam with a 26 " barrel and factory muzzle break. I shot it many years ago when he first bought it. But I didn't own a 300 weatherby back then. But I couldn't help but notice how mild the recoil was I mean less than my semi auto 30-06.
I still don't like the added length and louder report.  But as I age I sure did like the lighter recoil.  To the point that I was actually thinking about sending my 300 and 340 to weatherby to have them installed.  Just looking for any thoughts you might have on the subject.  Your input is always appreciated.
Thank you

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Getting your scope level
« on: December 21, 2024, 06:54:05 PM »
I have bought a couple different leveling products that really don't work.  I came up with this method that works well as long as you have a flat area on your base you can access.
I use 3 levels a flat piece of steel. A  stock channel  tool works well. I balance the flat steel with a level on each side and a 3rd level on the cap or top screw. In this case my son's scope is canted. I am going to loosen the rings straighten it so all 3 are level and slowly tighten them back up. It works every time on my rifles.

I just bought a Bergara B14 Ridge Rifle in 450 bushmaster.  To take advantage of Michigan's allowing you to shoot the straight wall hunting cartridges instead of a muzzle loader during the Muzzle loader season in lower MI.
I already had the brass dies and bullets.  As I had one in the past. And some just left a nearly full box of brass on the table at my gun club.
So I was loading another box and used the once fired brass. I primed rhe 1st one just fine then the 2nd and 3rd wouldn't except the primer. I was using cci small rifle. It turns out Hornady made the switch to large rifle some time in 2022.
Some Sauid because small rifle primers were to hard to come by.
But what I want to know is the load data the same. ?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you Grizz

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Remington Moment
« on: September 08, 2024, 11:19:21 AM »
I took my Remington model 700 ML to the range just to chronograph the muzzle  velocity to compare with the 450 bushmaster.  Shooting the same bullet.  With 3 pellets 150 grains  of win triple 7 It  just went over 2000 fps. Compared to the 450 BM at 2200. I have the chance to hunt lower MI farm land wich is shotgun only or certain straight wall cartridges. But I thought I'd see if my ML can equal the 450 BM it would be good enough.
But my first shot seemed to go off instantly. I wasn't sure what happened. I have never had it happen to me. And I have owned this ML for 25 years and never touched the trigger. So I reloaded it and it went off with very little trigger pressure.  The 3rd shot went of as soon as I flipped off the safety.  That was enough.  In tearing it down now to see if the trigger has some corrosion build up. But I don't see any. But I will test it as soon as I put the bolt back together.  Needles to say A Bagara Ridge rifle in 450 BM is in my future.  I wish Weatherby made one in there Vanguard line.

I'm loading some test rounds for a freind.
Who bought a Browing x bolt in .308
I am loading 165 gr. Accubonds. But I don't have alot of powders that work well on the .308
I have loaded some with RL 15 and Varget.
But I was wanting to try a couple more.
Imr 4350 seems to have very slow velocity.
Other powders I have for it are. IMR 4895 / H 380 / H 335 / benchmark  / win 760
If anyone can recommend a good loading with those powders. Please let me know.
Thank you

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Barnes TTSX Rcovered Bullet
« on: December 03, 2023, 12:32:25 PM »
I shot my first deer using the Barnes TTSX
From A 30-06 it was the 165 grain.
The shot was about 20 yards at a steep angle from tree stand. I didn't see the exit hole until it was hanging on the buck pole. I thought it was weird the it wouldn't exit from a 20 yard neck shot. I had taken pics of it lying there to text to my boys and freind. So once I seen the exit hole I thought I bet I can find that Bullet. I went back for a couple days of muzzle loading this weekend and brought a metal detector.  With in 5 minutes I was holding the bullet. In perfect condition and weighing 163. 3 grains.
I have read many of you praise this bullet so I had to try it.
It exceeded my expectations..
Thank You
