I just bought a Bergara B14 Ridge Rifle in 450 bushmaster.  To take advantage of Michigan's allowing you to shoot the straight wall hunting cartridges instead of a muzzle loader during the Muzzle loader season in lower MI.
I already had the brass dies and bullets.  As I had one in the past. And some just left a nearly full box of brass on the table at my gun club.
So I was loading another box and used the once fired brass. I primed rhe 1st one just fine then the 2nd and 3rd wouldn't except the primer. I was using cci small rifle. It turns out Hornady made the switch to large rifle some time in 2022.
Some Sauid because small rifle primers were to hard to come by.
But what I want to know is the load data the same. ?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you Grizz

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Remington Moment
« on: September 08, 2024, 11:19:21 AM »
I took my Remington model 700 ML to the range just to chronograph the muzzle  velocity to compare with the 450 bushmaster.  Shooting the same bullet.  With 3 pellets 150 grains  of win triple 7 It  just went over 2000 fps. Compared to the 450 BM at 2200. I have the chance to hunt lower MI farm land wich is shotgun only or certain straight wall cartridges. But I thought I'd see if my ML can equal the 450 BM it would be good enough.
But my first shot seemed to go off instantly. I wasn't sure what happened. I have never had it happen to me. And I have owned this ML for 25 years and never touched the trigger. So I reloaded it and it went off with very little trigger pressure.  The 3rd shot went of as soon as I flipped off the safety.  That was enough.  In tearing it down now to see if the trigger has some corrosion build up. But I don't see any. But I will test it as soon as I put the bolt back together.  Needles to say A Bagara Ridge rifle in 450 BM is in my future.  I wish Weatherby made one in there Vanguard line.

I'm loading some test rounds for a freind.
Who bought a Browing x bolt in .308
I am loading 165 gr. Accubonds. But I don't have alot of powders that work well on the .308
I have loaded some with RL 15 and Varget.
But I was wanting to try a couple more.
Imr 4350 seems to have very slow velocity.
Other powders I have for it are. IMR 4895 / H 380 / H 335 / benchmark  / win 760
If anyone can recommend a good loading with those powders. Please let me know.
Thank you

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Barnes TTSX Rcovered Bullet
« on: December 03, 2023, 12:32:25 PM »
I shot my first deer using the Barnes TTSX
From A 30-06 it was the 165 grain.
The shot was about 20 yards at a steep angle from tree stand. I didn't see the exit hole until it was hanging on the buck pole. I thought it was weird the it wouldn't exit from a 20 yard neck shot. I had taken pics of it lying there to text to my boys and freind. So once I seen the exit hole I thought I bet I can find that Bullet. I went back for a couple days of muzzle loading this weekend and brought a metal detector.  With in 5 minutes I was holding the bullet. In perfect condition and weighing 163. 3 grains.
I have read many of you praise this bullet so I had to try it.
It exceeded my expectations..
Thank You

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / First Great Lakes Steelhead
« on: September 18, 2023, 06:09:45 PM »
I bought a fixer upper boat this summer. And wanted it for a St. Clair river walleye and lake Huron trout and salmon boat.
Finally got it in the water last week and cought nothing . But went back on Saturday as the coho and steelhead are coming in closer to shore with dropping water Temps. And was thrilled to hear the drag sing and a 7 color leadcore set up.
The fish jumped only once . And I handed the rod over to my brother when he wasn't able to extend my net. And it made a few runs for him too.
So we both got to fight the first fish to hit the live well.  27" 8 lb very colorful steelhead.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Eastern Blue Birds
« on: May 25, 2023, 02:01:47 PM »
I had never seen a baby bird fly away for the first time until today. I got to watch 3 bluebirds take flight from there bird house.
I have only lived in bluebird country for the last 5 years and started putting up houses for the. Only to learn that the English sparrow is a bitter enemy.  And last year watched from my window them kill the baby bluebirds in seconds.
This year I was ready with pellet gun until the first egg was layer then I put up sparrow  spookers that worked like a charm.
I can finally rest easy now that they flew off . I was 2 months of work but well worth it.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Sako 370 Magnum
« on: May 18, 2023, 05:57:43 PM »
I thought this was another new not needed caliber.  Turns out it's been around for 20 years under the 9.33x66 mm head stamp. Sako has Amercanized it because we tend not to like metric calibers save the 7mm and 6.5 A quote from the article.  I apologize that I don't know how to copy and paste the article.  I have to sit down and learn.
But in the End my take is it can't do anything the 375 h & h can't do.  So why bother when we can't even keep 375 ammo on the shelf.

I finally made up my mind on which one to buy.
I went with the Eberlestock Recon. I had never used anything Molle before but once I seen how it worked on there system.  That's when I went with them. With all the junk I use to hunt deer this pack should make my life on stand much easier.  Binos / Range Finder / Phone and Pistol all on my chest. And not having to remember which pocket has which will be very helpful.
I think I'm going to love this thing.

I put in for the MI Elk Lottery I have 21 Chances I went Bull only so it would be like winning the Lottery.  They give out around 200 tags. Maybe 50 for Bull only.
But after saving for 11 years of saving my bear points I applied for A Hunt this year. I'm  guaranteed A Bear License with that many points.  I have always went to the upper peninsula to bear hunt but this time I'm going to the northern lower where I deer hunt.
Who's All Applying for What and Where ?

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Bullet Testing at 70°
« on: May 07, 2023, 11:57:15 AM »
I went to the range yesterday it was 70° here and that's not hot. But I can't imagine I will ever hunt with my 300 or 340 Weatherbys much warmer than that. I was testing velocity of my backed down loads. Along with accuracy and most importantly case sticking. Happy to say everything went well. The 300 wby. With 180 gr Trophy Bonded tip with 84 grs. Of MRP at 3313 avg velocity. No case sticking.
The 340 wby. With 250 gr. Nosler Partitions with 85 grs. Of 7828 SSC at 2906 avg. Velocity.  And no case sticking.
Come summer I will test them again at hotter Temps to make sure. But I was happy with the results yesterday.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Varmint Leauge
« on: April 23, 2023, 04:29:03 PM »
Varmint leauge at the club I belong to started today.  Pretty chilly for A April 23rd. 34° with 10 mph winds at the 9 am start.
I shot about as good as I can in both rimfire and ceterfire. I had one target I wanted to post but my scorer gave me his targets instead of mine to take home. But I was happy to keep up with the custom rifle guys at least for the1st match.

I had just asked A freind who works at Williams gun sight if he's seen any 410 shells. He said just buck shot and slugs. Niot A week latter there they were 6 shot. I sent my nephew a text and he said grab me 4 boxes for his son. Hopefully just another sign that things are coming around slow but sure.

I'm watching a repeat of this show with the CEO
Of Swift Bullets Bill Hober Hunting Cape Buffalo.
He shoots 2 Cape Buffalo with the Swift A Frame. Forgive me if I posted the first time. But I am just so impressed with this guy at his age getting out there and making it happen.
They recovered the Bullets but I didn't catch the caliber.  But the A Frame looked and preformed perfectly.  Now I suppose they could have brought the perct mushroom with them.
But that guy inspires me.
Now there showing lions trying to steal there hanging meat right in camp. I have to get there one day.
