Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Weatherby and hammer bullets
« on: September 02, 2021, 08:10:30 PM »
Just read Weatherby is going to start making ammunition with hammer bullets. This will be very interesting. I’ve done load work up with the hunter and absolute and they are definitely different in a good way.

Reloading / 6.5-300 & 156 bergers
« on: July 18, 2021, 02:45:29 PM »
Took a while but finally got this finished, base model 26” vanguard with a homemade brake, 77.5 gr n570( max according to berger) groups are 2 shot and was bringing it into bullseye ( needs one more click to right. Used the rubber harmonic thingy to bring groups in , ugly but worked slick

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / How much stronger
« on: June 19, 2021, 07:59:20 PM »
How much stronger/durable would you say a mark v is over a vanguard? Reason I ask is I’ve been pretty brutal to a vanguard in 6.5-300 and when the time comes I’m going to rebarrel and continue. I’m wondering since now it’s not too difficult to rebarrel a mark v and I really enjoy shooting the cartridge

Well, finally got it put together and a few rounds out of it. It’s a cheapo cabelas savage 12fv in a chassis with a criteron prefit. Working on some 90gr vld’s and 83 hammers. So far not as fast as I thought but playing with different powders till I settle. Working on two shot strings it’s getting quite a few groups touching or one hole. More recoil than I thought there’d be. Those tiny long little bullets are nasty looking. Weather went to crap here till next weekend but hoping to be done with velocity test and then using a tuner for tightening groups. Then it’s going to eastern Washington for dope and coyote management.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / 257 premium ammo
« on: May 20, 2021, 03:35:46 PM »
Has anybody chronographed the 257 nosler premiums? I did a while back with 4 out of my brothers vanguards so he could dial out a ways. They were spot on in about 40 degrees at 600ish elevation. Varied about 6fps. I was just curious if anybody else had done this at different temps and elevation and seen much difference. To me , this is very hard to beat hand loading.

Finally pulled the trigger and building one. Probably going to kick myself because I betcha weatherby’s going to build a box gun that duplicates or betters but pretty excited if I can at least  get it performing before they do. Going to be some sad coyotes.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / V3 auto trickler
« on: February 18, 2021, 03:26:19 PM »
I just purchased the v3 and the fx12i scale. Scale got here and still about 8 weeks out for the v3. I was messing around and checking my old pact against it and was surprised how far off it was. It’s within 1/10 but I was surprised how much that can vary at least with small ball powder. Spendy setup but might shorten load work ups. Hoping I can skip looking for a velocity node and just stay below pressure . We shall see!

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Plinking
« on: February 07, 2021, 08:43:29 AM »
Finally going to do some shooting this Tuesday !! Haven’t shot anything since last fall !! I’ve got to do a tracking test on a Mark v that goes unknown after 450 meters and my brother has been pestering me to get a load worked up for his Tikka. Going to change to the 153 bergers in the 6.5-300 so might as well plink some steel with the 50 rds of Hornady I’ve  got loaded. Going to stop and check out the newly located local gun store on the way home. Place looked empty when I drove by it last week. Maybe cus they’re sold out of everything. Anyways, couldn’t help but share my excitement lol!

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Bullet suggestion
« on: January 22, 2021, 08:38:32 AM »
My brother bought one of those super light   Tika rifles in 300 wsm. He had a muzzle break installed and a trigger job done ( it felt really stiff ) . He still wasn’t grouping very well so I told him to hang tough and I would help him work up a load. It has a 1-11 twist. I picked up some lead tipped 165 Sierra sbt thinking lesser recoil and a good match for the twist. A friend of mine said the lead tipped bullets out of his 300wsm caused too much damage. Should I bag the lead tips and go with something else? This gun will be used in Montana for mule deer in the Libby area

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Ammo prices !
« on: January 20, 2021, 11:21:19 AM »
I haven’t done any shooting or reloading since last summer. Been trying to finish a house while working full time. A friend of my brothers asked if I could help reload for a 300 wsm. Holy cow! Ha ha! Nothing available. So I was just breezing through available ammo on midway and noticed the prices. Wow!! I remember when my brother bought a 338 lapua and $5.00 a round was ridiculous. Ha! Good grief! This is crazy

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Barrel tuners
« on: August 09, 2020, 08:44:20 AM »
I’m seeing that barrel tuners are on a comeback. Ugly devices but I’ve used them with good success back when browning had the boss system and even now with the rubber harmonic thing that slides onto the barrel. These new ones make the adjustments plain and simple. The range master was telling me about a guy that changes his adjustments to match the conditions for his competition rifle. I’ve used them to tighten a group on a bullet that my rifle wasn’t fond of to start but it was more of a set and forget in my case. Anybody else ever mess with these with any success?

Man this sounds fun. Disappointed they don’t have a bone stock factory class but if they did I’d feel pretty good with the 6.5-300 bone stock and not having to worry about the stupid handicap of rounds per minute

I’ve been asked to reload for one of these. I’ve never reloaded for a semi auto. H110 and 325 speers  is the only thing I found on the Hodgdon site. Probably fine but I was wondering if I should try to find something with a crimp groove. One of the reviews on midway said this was the most reliable feed for this gun. Anybody reload or know someone that does for this gun?

Finally got my stimulus check and been thinking about one of these since they came out. Wondering if anybody on here has any experience with one?
