Archery / Re: Any new bows or crossbows this year?

30lbs here for everything shy of Bison (those require 40lbs) but after shooting my buddies Super Kodiak 45lb I think I want to jump to a nicer bow at some point. Mines rated 35 but on a scale I'm at 37lbs @ 28", so I'm pulling around 33-34 at my draw length, fully legal but still room for improvement IMO

Just picked up a Samick Sage 35lb that I've been playing around with, might jump up to a one piece 45lb by next javelina season

Started out on a Savage 24, I think it was a "C", .22lr/.410 and my Dad's Browning Grade 1, after that I was given a Remington 34 that I still use today on occasion. That rifle has more miles on it than a lot of big bores, it's been on trips from the Maine coast, to the Rockies in ID  and down to the Sonora desert in Arizona, but now it mostly takes a backseat to the Henry H001 for general use

Yea, but based on a Vanguard so I can actually afford one  :D

I think it would be pretty cool if Weatherby got into the bolt action pistol game, like the Remington XP-100 or the Savage Striker. I see Nosler made on based on their M48 action, I think that a 14" barreled Vanguard would be a fun hunting rig

Rifles / Re: .257 questions

I haven't shot them through anything as fast as my .257 (yet) but I've been using the Btips in a 7mm-08 for years and it's a wicked deer load, I've shot them as close as 11 yards and they just go in a pile. Keep it off the shoulder and it'll hit like Thor's hammer. My old man has shot them longer than I have out of his .280 Rem and the worst I've seen damage wise was he hit a buck running full tilt going away from him and up and out of a gully up this steep ridge, when that bullet hit it put a hole in the backstrap you could throw a cat through, but that buck only made it another 20' before expiring.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / New guy from AZ

Hey all,
just wanted to drop a line and say Hey! Been lurkin in the background for awhile and decided to finally start an account. A little about myself, I'm a semi-recent transplant to AZ from NY. I've been here about 2 years, and it's getting to where I don't refer to NY as "home" anymore. I'm an avid hunter, but not much of a shooter. I enjoy it, but I find myself shooting maybe  a couple boxes every couple of months through my rifles. I recently picked up a Vanguard S2 in .257 and so far I love that thing! very smooth shooting. I'm not much on breaking in rifles, so I just slowly ran through a box of Norma 100gr spitzers and so far I'm impressed with this rifle! It's topped with a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 3-9x40 I picked up on sale and I like it too, just not 100% sold on the exposed turrets for a centerfire rifle. the only tactical style scope I've ever used prior was on a PCP air rifle for work, and that's since been swapped for a capped model.

So I guess I'll pose my 1st question in this forum. For the .257, what style scopes do you guys prefer (power, reticle etc) and how far do you usually hunt game? I'm usually more of a lower power, duplex reticle style hunter but I wouldn't mind letting this rifle stretch its legs on the range once in awhile
