Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Re: 7 Wby for Grizzley?
« on: March 22, 2015, 11:04:53 PM »
I use my 7B with great confidence on elk and would have even greater confidence with my .300 Roy loaded with 180 or 200 grain premium bullets. Since I maintain my treaty with the Bears which includes not shooting at them, I can't speak from experience. I'm usually packing my .35 Whelen in grizzly country regardless of target species. Good hunting!

Ammo / Re: 7MM Weatherby Mag Ammo for Sale

I can't speak for PMC 7mm Wby ammo, but have had issues with their .30-30 and .223 ammo in the past. I have also had poor luck with Hornady Interbond 7mm Wby ammo although the Hornady brass is good, but you can't even come close to the same recipe for loads since the Hornady has way less case capacity than Weatherby brass. Eldorado was PMC's premium line so it may be ok.

We'll see, but copper elimination?  Sound like an over-imaginative marketing department.

If it happens with all ammo, try swabbing the bore with a dry Bore Snake after each round.  However, I'm betting it is the shooter not the rifle. No offense, but a quarter inch "flyer".  We should all have that problem! LOL

My pappy used to say, "some folks would complain if you hung 'em with a new rope." LOL!

I don't know what you shot those deforemed Barnes TSX into, but they won't expand if shot into newsprint, dirt, trees, etc.  They require hydraulic force in the nose cavity to open the petals correctly. They must be tested in near-live tissue, water box, or ballistic gelatin to evaluate on-game results.  I am not disputing your other anecdotal evidence and successes with other bullets.  Barnes TTSX, TSX, and Nosler Accubonds are my bullets of choice since the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw is no longer around without plating.

Zonie makes a godd point. I too used to wear a faded Carhartt duck brown jacket until I realized it looked like and elk rump. I won't hunt during firearm or muzzleloader season without blaze orange. Too many goobers in the woods and mountains. Even private land is no safe haven since said goobers will trespass in a heartbeat. If someone shoots in my direction while I'm wearing blaze orange or glasses me with a scoped rifle, I immediately classify his intentions as nefarious and take appropriate action.

What flavor of varmints are y'all using the .240 Wby for? Just curious.

Hmmm... Might be the Mark V I've been looking for to re barrel to .35 Whelen.

Rifles / Re: Why no vanguards chambered in 7mm wby???

The Roy beats the Rem in a couple of aspects. About 150 fps faster with most bullets and the longer neck makes it easier for handloading. If I were not rolling my own, I'd probably go for the Rem Mag. But a .30-06 will do 90% of what a 7mm Rem Mag will do in my opinion.

My lightweight 06 has almost as much felt recoil as my Fibermark .300 Wby

Roger,
I think I'll pass on a scope that weighs nearly 2 pounds and 15 inches long made in Asia and casts $1,000.  For that cash, I'll take a gently used or new Kahles or Swarovski;  which is exactly what I did.  I'm sure it is a fine optic if NightForce puts their name on it.

Sorry to hear that news. May he rest in peace. Condolences to the family and friends.

I agree with Dubyam. Shot placement is everything. That's a mighty big doe.... Hit in the right spot, almost any caliber will cause a train wreck. A frontal hit into the shoulder will usually make a mess and is not necessarily a lethal hit unless blood loss is severe.

On the scope, I have never had a Leupold fail me. I have had them on all manner of rifles and still have several.  However, their mid and lower end scopes are not that great when compared with Meopta, Kahles, and USA made Burris scopes like the Black Diamond and Signature Select series.  That said, any Leupold  VX 2 or better should serve you well if it fits your purpose.

Rifles / Re: Safety in fire position to operate bolt
« on: November 27, 2014, 03:12:33 PM »
I apologize for my tacky response earlier. The Mark V is the best safety system around, but not foolproof. This is not a Mark V in question since it is chamber in a WSM.

Operator error prevention cannot be designed into rifles that are required to go into action immediately. If you want safety beyond reason, go buy a Remington 700 that allows the bolt to open from safe, put a trigger lock on it, and don't load the rifle.
