Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / A new shooter is born!!
« on: August 25, 2009, 12:29:53 PM »
My inlaws were up from FL this past weekend. My brother in law was anxious to go out shooting but his step son was still under his mamas watchful eye.  I didn't want to offer because I know she is wary about weapons.  When she saw how much her hubby wanted to go and gave her OK, I took them both out. He hadn't shot in several years.   The stepson, Tim, never shot a weapon of any kind in his life and it was his 18th birthday.

I started Tim off with a .22 after a rigorous safety and instructional briefing.  He did remarkably well.   When he was comfortable, I showed him my .243.  He shot amazing groups right of the bat.  I was impressed.  His dad was busy with my .30-06 most of the time so he didn't have much time to shoot it, and turned down the offer as he wasnt ready.

As we were leaving, I put 3 water jugs out at the 100yd line and popped mine with the .30-06.  Tim popped his with the .243. His dad missed the jug 5 times.  Tim asked for a chance at the 06 before we left. He took one 'test' shot to get used to the recoil. (last thing I want is him to get a scope cut on his forehead to show mom).  His second shot ever with the 06 he nailed the jug that his dad couldn't hit dead center!

I guess I'll have to get reloading. I know where we'll be when they visit!  We had a great, safe morning and a load of fun.

I appreciate the fact that so many of you are expert marksmen.  I have been shooting .22s for a long time at normal match ranges and I've done the military thing with limited m-16 experience. But as far as long distance shooting, it is new to me.
So here is the deal.  I shoot a .243 and a 30-06.  I sight them both in at 100 yds. The range i have access to is up to 100 yds, no further and I wouldnt know where to find a longer range in CT.  All the deer i have taken have been taken at under 50 yds.  I have read about sighting in at longer ranges to increase the distance as the bullet will drop off quickly when sighted at 100 yds.

So my 30-06 vanguard shoots great groups dead on center at 100 yds with factory Federal rounds or my handloaded Nosler ballistic tips (which i'm super happy with).  My .243 shoots my handloads dead center.... except for 100 gr rounds (i load 62, 75, and 85 gr rounds, different brands.  My 100gr are nosler partitions and hornady soft point.) My 100 gr rounds shoot high consistently. The Hornady about 1.5in, and the partitions 2.5-3 in high.

My question is, where do I find info on the bullet paths of different rounds at different ranges?  If I'm 2 in high at 100 yds, where am I at 25, 50 or 75. If I'm dead on at 100 yards, same thing.  What if i get an opportunity for a longer shot?  How do you guys keep track of bullet drop or compensate for distance?  What if I hunt coyotes with varmint rounds and Deer with partitions the same season with the same gun, different groupings?

I am a successful hunter, but my shots arent always spot on where I thought they would be.  My wife is a math teacher and would happily spend hours talking about parabolas, but I'd rather not.  As an under 100yd hunter I'm happy, but I plan to expand my horizons in the future and wouldn't want to embarrass myself or wound an animal.

Another kinda dumb question from a newbie.

Reloading / Primer Seating
« on: April 22, 2009, 06:08:44 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm new to reloading and I've been cranking some rounds out since last December with pretty good results.  I have a few things that are bugging me and I need some expert help.  I have a feeling these issues are related, but I'll ask about 'em anyway....
First off, I have a Lyman turret press and dies (bought by a matter of convenience vs preference). I've read and reread the loading manual and lots of online research.

The one thing that 'sticks out' (wow, a bad pun)  is that the primers are supposed to be seated below flush.  I just cannot get those results.  The best I can get is flush or slightly above flush. How bad is it to continue like this??  I have new and once fired brass of different brands.  The primers i'm using are Remington 9 1/2 large rifle  for my .243 and .30-06 rounds. I would assume that all primers would be of the same specs and there are no primers to be found within 100 miles anyway.
The rounds I load are nice and accurate. They fire fine, but the bolt on my Vanguard and my remington are both tight on handloads.  Could this be a tolerance issue of the bolt trying to close with a slightly unseated primer?

I crank on the press but they don't seat any further.  I've played with the priming arm to see if there is an adjustment, but it does not seem to have anything limiting how deep it can set a primer.  Maybe the primer hole needs better cleaning?

Your thoughts are appreciated and respected. Thanks in advance!!

Ammo / Factory Ammo
« on: August 09, 2008, 06:59:44 PM »
Okay, what is the trick?  I never thought it would make that big a difference.  I got a Vanguard SS Sporter... my first rifle... in 30-06.   I got a "normal" caliber because I dont load my own (yet).  I picked up Remington Core lokt rounds in 150, 165 and 180 grain rounds.   They do OK.  Federal power shock rounds give me AWESOME groups.  I was looking for some good big game rounds.  I picked up some Winchester super X silver tip rounds... I figured in 180 grain they'd have some good take down power.  I was shooting 2in groups with the federal rounds (with my flinching) and was happy with my groups. The remington rounds did OK.. decent groups that i can get better with practice.  The win. silvertips barely hit the paper.  What gives?!??! I figured on some difference, but these are terrible!! Are rifles that picky?
Second part of the question, when you load your own do you have the same problems? Do you need to experiment as much to find "the perfect round?"  What is the best reloading equimpent for a beginner and where does one start for bullets, powder, etc. Where is the best place to pick up reloading supplies... cabelas?  Ebay?

You guys are the pros!! Thanks a bunch.
