Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Second Deer Hunt
« on: November 15, 2018, 03:13:38 PM »
My Silverado is packed with my ATV in the bed and gear in the back seat for my second whitetail hunt this fall, this time on Manitoulin Island. Picking up a hunting buddy at 4:45 am tomorrow then meeting another truck with a group of three hunters at 5:30 am for a nice 11 hr drive. The first group of three went up Wednesday (retired folks) to clear trails. Season starts Monday the 19th so we will have plenty of time to scout and set up stands. The weather looks good, some snow and cold in the forecast. I will post pictures and a run down of the hunt when I return on the 24th.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Newfie duck hunter
« on: October 31, 2018, 05:33:15 AM »
A Newfie went hunting one day in Ontario and bagged three ducks. He put them in the bed of his pickup truck and was about to drive home when he was confronted by an ornery game warden who didn’t like Newfies.

The game warden ordered the Newfie to show his hunting license, and the Newfie pulled out a valid Ontario hunting license.

The game warden looked at the license, then reached over and picked up one of the ducks, sniffed its , and said, “This duck ain’t from Ontario. This is a Quebec duck. You got a Quebec huntin’ license, boy?” The Newfie reached into his wallet and produced a Quebec hunting license.

The game warden looked at it, then reached over and grabbed the second duck, sniffed its , and said, “This ain’t no Quebec duck. This duck’s from Manitoba . You got a Manitoba license?” The Newfie reached into wallet and produced a Manitoba hunting license.

The warden then reached over and picked up the third duck, sniffed its , and said,

“This ain’t no Manitoba duck. This here duck’s from Nova Scotia . You got a Nova Scotia huntin’ license?” Again the Newfie reached into his wallet and brought out a Nova Scotia hunting license.

The game warden was extremely frustrated at this point, and he yelled at the Newfie,

“Just where the hell are you from?”

The Newfie turned around, bent over, dropped his pants, and said,

“You tell me, you’re the expert.”

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Black bear hunt
« on: September 24, 2018, 02:46:40 PM »
Just got back from our annual black bear hunt and harvested a nice 2 year old. The weather was terrible with rain and high winds for the first three days but on the last night we finally got a break in the weather and one of our younger members harvested his first black bear estimated at 150 lbs. All in all another great hunt at Burks Falls with some awesome shore lunches

Heading up to my cousins property in Burks Falls to black bear hunt Sept 19th to 23rd, looks very promising after our bait site replenishing trip last week. I will take lots of pictures should we get lucky and harvest one or more.

I am bringing my Savage model 114 American Classic fluted stainless in 300 Win Mag. Ammo is Remington Hyper Sonic Ultra Bonded 180 grain, the same combo that I used to harvest a 350 lb + bear last fall

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Mark V Accumark
« on: August 10, 2018, 11:09:33 AM »
I am looking at possibly purchasing a Mark V Accumark in 270 Weatherby Mag and only want to purchase one type of ammo to take whitetail, black bear and moose. I have cut it down to two choices, 140 grain Accubond or 150 grain Partition.

I am not interested in reloading so it would just be factory ammo, what are your thoughts on the best all around bullet.

Don't take some of the comments from my Ontario brothers to heart, we have had winter for the past 5 months so everyone is getting a little grumpy.....

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / How is your winter so far
« on: December 13, 2017, 04:46:25 PM »
We are getting beat up pretty bad here in Ontario with lots of snow and cold temps. They forecasted a good old Canadian winter for us this year and for a change they were right.
How is your winter shaping up.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Late Season Moose Hunt
« on: November 20, 2017, 04:20:27 PM »
We are heading to Thunder Bay (Ontario) tomorrow at 11:30 pm for an 8 day late season moose hunt packing a bull tag for 8 guys. I am bringing my 7MM Rem Mag with Federal 160 grain Trophy Bonded Tip.
Looks like good snow to track so we are optimistic. This is my first year for this hunt so as you can imagine I am fired up.

Last year the group had a cow tag.......and you guessed it, saw no cows but several nice bulls. I have no cell service this far back in the northern bush so I will report when I get back

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Recipes
« on: November 15, 2017, 03:45:16 PM »
This may have already been brought up in the past so excuse my ignorance if it has but I was thinking as I am frying some whitetail steaks in butter and then lowering the heat and adding a can of mushroom soup to let simmer for 20 minutes or so for supper tonight  :) that it would be great to have a section to share recipes only on the nation.

I can only guess that many members would have lots of recipes for whitetail, moose, elk.........etc.

Just got back from a three day whitetail hunt in Burks Falls and we ended up with three deer, two bucks and a doe.
Here is the nice 8 point my buddy got, he also shot a nice 6 point so he was the winner of the buck pot. I had two nice bull moose 40 yards broadside but out of season here......of course
Good time had by all

Heading to Burk's Falls (Ontario) on Saturday to prepare for the start of rifle whitetail season on the 6th. We don't need a lot of prep to stands and trails due to multiple trips throughout the year but want to get there early to get camp set-up and enjoy a few days of pre-hunting with the gang.
Will post results when I return. We have (3) doe permits for 8 hunters.
For my USA friends, we automatically get a buck tag when we buy a whitetail license and have to apply for antlerless tag in a lottery

I read on another post that members had this ammo for sale. I am a big fan of Federal Trophy Bonded Tip and was wondering if folks could share some on game performance with the Trophy Copper........
