Rifles / Re: Mark V Deluxe 340 Mag no Accubrake?
« on: March 18, 2024, 10:22:10 PM »
I bought my Mark V Stainless 340 Weatherby Mag. new in 1996.  It was Weatherby's first year of USA production.  It has no brake.  I really do not like brakes.  Too loud!

Savage 99 in 300 Savage or 250/3000 Savage.  These cartridges are classics also.

The very best example of this that I can think of is the 6.8 Western.  Looks to me like a 270 WSM with a fast twist barrel. Nothing more, nothing less.

The 270 Weatherby Magnum is a fine cartridge. I owned one in a Mark V Stainless years ago. I currently own a Mark V Stainless in 7 MM Weatherby Magnum.  I sold the 270 and still have the 7 MM. Performance IMO was too close to justify having both and the 7 MM has a wider range of bullet styles and weights to choose from.

I have owned firearms chambered for the following "unusual" cartridges.

220 Swift
303 Savage
300 Savage
41 Rem.Magnum
7x57 Mauser
444 Marlin
35 Whelen
45/70 Govt.

I currently own the following

22 Hornet
222 Rem.
240 Weatherby Magnum(where I live I am the only hunter I know of that owns one)
17 Hornady Mach 2

I see what and why she is doing it but the Colt 45 or a lever action rifle would have been a nicer historic pick.
I agree 100%

I have a Weatherby Mark V "Stainless" in 7mm Weatherby Magnum I bought new in 1996. Works just fine. Not in the market for the newest thing.  I will not be buying one.

I have an original 1986 vintage Leupold "Gold Ring" 20x60mm.  This was Leupold's first venture into spotting scopes.  Still clear and bright after all those years. I never felt the need to upgrade.

Good news for Florida however I would never carry open for reasons already mentioned.  I carry but concealed. A Hunter IWB leather holster with a old S&W 38 Special Model 64 pinned barrel 2" stainless. I load it up with Winchester "Ranger" LE +P loads. A 130 grain bonded HP. Hope I never use it but good to be ready.

The 300 Weatherby, not Roy's first cartridge but his best IMO.  I have owned three different 300's over the years.  The first a Ultramark Mark V, then a Lazermark Mark V and last a Mark V Stainless.  I still have the Stainless.  Sold or traded the other two.  Roy's friend Elgin Gates hunted over nearly the entire world with a 300 Weatherby Magnum.  Need say no more. ;D

Yes they did hit Poland just across the border from Ukraine however it was just over the border and only two strikes. Does not sound like an attack on Poland more like an errant shot to me.  Certainly not worth getting into WWIII over. Cool heads need to prevail.  I do not want U.S. boots on the ground in Ukraine.

Besides hunting and shooting I am also an avid fly fisherman.  A tiger trout is a cross between a female brown trout and a male brook trout.  They are VERY, VERY rare in the wild. I know fellas who have fly fished their entire life and not caught one.  I have caught two WildTigerTrout in nearly 20 years I have fly fished and consider myself blessed to have done so.

I bought a Weatherby Mark V Lightweight Stainless 240 Mag. back in the late 1990's when they first became available in the 6 lug action.  I can attest to the fact that it is a wonderful cartridge for white tailed deer.  I have killed a number of them with it.  All one shot kills.

I guess my Ruger .22 LR 10/22 Target rifle could be classed as an assault weapon since it's a semi-auto. I know the gray squirrels think it is!!  ;)
