Is everybody breaking in their 6.5-300 with the Barnes 127 factory load? I did that with the early Accumark I sold. I did do the recommended brake in ( for once) and was getting sub moa groups. Even Barnes says don't use their bullets for break in, but they were all that was available! Sorry if it is FUBAR, PARA45!

Mine absolutely hated the factory lrx’s.

Im using the Berger 210s.  H1000 coal at 3.71 and 215m primer.  less than 3/4 moa @ 2950 out of a MK5 sporter

37
They shoot under 1/2 moa @ 3425 fps in my 6.5-300.  Bang flop from 105 to 638 yds.  No bullets recovered.

I’m leaning towards the 257. Problem is I can’t use that in PA for elk hunting. We have a caliber restriction of 27cal with 130grain minimum. I hate to lay out the money for a 257 and not be able to use it.

Then is a no brainer....270 all the way.

39
.270 is a lot more versatile, and I own a .257.
If Wby would put a faster twist barrel on the .257 it would allow the use of the heavier 130ish grain bullets that are now coming out.

You have the horsepower, use it ;D.  210 Berger VLD(.323 G7 BC), H1000, 215M, 3.71COAL, 2950fps no sweat.  Dead critters everywhere........

I have watched the long range shows and it got me to thinking about bullet performance
I did some figuring; going by  velocity of bullet, and energy at impact.
I shoot barnes bullets and test the Hornady ELD-X. Barnes lists their bullet to expand down to 2000 fps, l think Hornady is 1800 fps
I never push the limit when shooting at game, also l want at least 1500 ft lbs of energy.
I shoot a .257 wby, 100 TTSX, 340 wby, 225 TTSX
Going by the above listings the:
.257 wby = 450 yards max
340 wby = 500 yards max

Some may question this and that's fine but
I shot a bull elk at 380 yards with a 338 win mag and a 225 TTSX, the bullet weighed up at 226 grains, there is a piece of bone under one of the pedals. The point is this was max range for this rifle bullet combo, to get  reliable expansion with that bullet
So a 1000 yard shot on game, with what bullet?
Also do a little research on 1000 yard F class winning targets, you may be surprised on the size of the groups.
It's not a matter of weather you can hit an animal or not, its weather you can take it cleanly with one shot.

I have proven this fact to myself  recently and will "never" push the limits of a caliber again.
340

For an interesting comparison using your 1500 lb energy threshold.
My .257 115 BERGER = 525 yd limit
     6.5-300 143 eldx= 900 yd limit
      .300 210 BERGER = 950 yd limit
I personally have no problem with people shooting animals at distances they practice at.  Firing a 3 shot group and then going hunting unfortunately is all too common,  and the long range hunting shows don’t help.

Well he must be mistaken or don't know what he is talking about because my MarkV ULW has 6 lands and grooves and no I DID NOT miscount and I marked every one and counted 4 times. So apparently it is just the Vanguards. Mybe someone else with newer MarkV can check theirs.
My early order Accumark is the came as yours.

The Barnes bullets aren't helping your copper fouling problems......., and 80 rounds through the barrel would not be acceptable for me.  These things have a short barrel life to begin with.

Pass through on antelope, no pass through on large white tails(270 lbs). Heart and lungs look like we’re ran through a blender.  105 to 638 yds.

You will more than likely have fantastic results with those bullets.  I have used BERGER’s for 15 years in my .257,115g @3500 fps and .300, 210g at 2940 fps.  I have yet to have a failure.  I would be using them in my 6.5x300 but the 143 eldx’s had a little better accuracy.  Don’t shoot the shoulder and you won’t waste any meat.

.257,115gr. @3500 fps?  Pretty hot load, about 200fps over max in the Berger book from a 26" barrel!   :)

Berger load data is very conservative and the load is very safe in my gun.
