Whitetail Deer / Re: 257 weatherby or 6.5x300
« on: November 04, 2024, 07:19:33 PM »
So if you have every Weatherby caliber from 224 to 340 you would consider this as having a problem? lol

257 is my all time favorite and will be till the day I die. Get one you'll love it, if you roll your own remember the bullet selection isn't' what the 6.5's or many others offer but plenty of premium bullets out there that do the deed just fine.

I have a deluxe and backcountry in 6.5-300. I would say 270 as far as effectiveness for medium sized game would be close to it's performance but a solid choice as well. I shoot 130 grain scirocco's in 6.5-300, RPM and 270 - I do have a ruger 1 in 270bee that shoots 150 grain a-frames nice brush buster round! LOL

I like letting the hot rods be hot rods, if yours likes the EOL's they are lethal, messy at close ranges but lethal none the less;

welcome to the club;

TG - while I do not have a TI i have a couple original BC rifles which are coated coyote tan which they don't offer anymore to my knowledge and a couple of custom jobs as well as some limited run ones i found a liking too! LOL i have a few,

So while i've never had an issue I thought was factory related - I did have a case where "I" (all my doing) lots a cleaning end of a rod in the barrel after many many attempts to dislodge I finally waived the white flag and called wby. Yes I got the ship us your rifle and let us diagnose it and we will send you service request etc. The lead time was as expected  (very long) so i had my rifle shipped back to the factory as I assumed the worst a re-barrel job would be the fix and I wanted it coated just like it was - again this was a custom shop order kuiu stock 257 LH to boot. Weatherby kept their promise and kept me informed when I would impatiently ask questions. The diagnosis was as expected I gave them my CC information and said fix it and ship it back. They did so in a timely fashion it was the wait for diagnosis that took forever which they fully disclosed.

The gun was returned and I ate a whole lot of crow as a 50 year old who made rookie mistake on a very high dollar rifle!

I would go through the normal routine as far as accuracy to rule out the simple stuff, another thing one might add i'm assuming it's a 6 lug and we did in fact use non-magnum base/rings for this as they are different from wby magnums? If needbe have it done by a gunsmith, we can all overlook or like in my case make a mistakes that will cause much frustration. Worst case in the off season send back to weatherby (hope that isn't nescessary) and get it back in time for 2025 season.

Best of luck keep us informed - I would rate weatherby CS as top shelf. Just my experiences and I own allot of them. I also would make a note not to get this LW hunting rifle hot and keep going. Yes it's a 308 and can take more rounds than a magnum, but a LW hunting rifle contour isn't intended to just go through a box in a short time frame. I've seen cases where guns were stored and had factory oil/grease build up, i've always taken new and given them a good clean start from scratch. I'm rambling at this point, hope you find a liking for this rifle all of mine are very good shooters in a LW package some of the few fiberglass stocked rifles I fool with as I prefer the wood stocked stuff;

curious if you tried various weights to see if it it like a different flavor?

I've gotten some over the years that needed some breaking in, never one of my BC rifles I have about 7-8 or so? Hopefully that gets better with time and so does accuracy.

Very fine and healthy buck, Aggie! Fine rifle and cartridge as well. Hard to beat the good ol' 257.

Btw, what county are you hunting?

thanks - We are located in Central Texas area,

Rifles / Re: Why not the 7mm wby?
« on: November 02, 2024, 01:07:32 PM »
ya not disagreeing at all, just stating what i've observed. Seems allot have died at the hands of the competition with the new kids. I'm all for it -

i made a 7stw with 1.85 twist she's a big heavy girl but throws the 195's like darts! My 7wby's fling 160's just fine and not much i can't or wont shoot with them when duty calls.

The fact that wby is making the BC models and others in the prc's shows they are making rifles based on demand and the demand is real love it or hate it. I wish they would have come out with an RPM suited for heavies myself, or maybe not i have enough rifles! LOL

Well here we go the much anticipated buck for the wife. The 257 safari style sighted in ready to go. The setup is an ancipated oat patch (weather isn't helping we need rain!!!) that is lined by our spring feed creek so it usually holds allot of doe/yearlings and you'll see bucks pass through for water or does depending on rut activity. Shots can range up to 300 plus. We do have one feeder setup and that shot will reach the max distance. Well we were greated with a nice overcast morning making visibility very difficult we knew we had a bunch of deer scattered thorugout the field and probably 12-15 over by the feeder area. Wasn't until about 7:40 well past legal shooting light before I caught this buck we've seen many times and let him go last season to gain another year. I told the wife he's already here in the field - not sure how comfortable you are making that shot and maybe he will work his way back towards us as they often exit the field back into our property as the creek is a boundary. If he does that will cut some distances down, he finally worked his way out into the opening and we were preparing for a shot she was safety off a couple of times at 275 yards and he would turn or something you know being a deer right?

After several minutes of this he actually started trotting back towards the middle of the field (basically we are setup on the middle of the field edge and left to right it will go 300 plus to about 250 plus yards at the furthest point. Ok this is good hes going to follow that doe we will have a nice 150-170 yard shot - well getting her on him as I would grunt to stop him those stars do not always align just right! What turned into this is going to work out perfect and would in a now or never opportunity for this particular morning most likely. The doe would enter the tree line at the creekside on our far right him still on her tail I was able to stop him for the final time and with a quartering away shot I said if your comfortable take him. The 257 roared throughout the creek bottom and our target buck would lay hidden in the tall grass. She hit him with the 92 grain hammers high shoulder and it exited base of the neck. Small entry and I would say just under a nickel exit wound. The shot was right at 200 yards and she knocked him down like a pro! Tickled, we looked back and she hasn't harvested a buck on the property in over 4 years.

The deer would live weight 160lbs - typical 8 point his distinguishing mark would be his left side G3 is shorter than his right.

Seems they only offer that in accumark and apex as customs.

Seems the market is dictating rather than the company IMO - 7mm wby maybe the most underrated of the wby cartridges. With new emphasis on twists and heavy bullets the wby and even the stw seem to be loosing market desire. If a man wanted a deal on a used wby in 7mm they can be found - have several and all shoot extremely well as well as some stw's. Big fan of both have enough guns and ammo to last two lifetimes with them.

Heading out in the morning as well JW, I have a good buck i've had my eye on for the wife. She's decided to be a trooper and head out with me in the morning - sure hope he shows! LOL she usually only goes evening hunts, which we've seen him both morning and evenings - gonna play day 1 hard see if he slips up and we will let the 257 eat!

25
By the time he put those gloves on I would be done field dressing a whitetail or medium sized critter like a deer and usually have very little blood on my hands when shot with a premium bullet. Another reason I use them, been in plenty of messes. If i'm not out in 5-8 minutes it's a shock, i split the pelvic bone down with a knife If I can't get it really fast a bone saw will in a min or so. We have a processor literally a mile from our ranch and they are usually still warm when he gets them! LOL

I also use wire ties or zip ties for tagging danno - both work great for our little texas tags.

Something like this Oscar? Happens to be a 257 weatherby as well! :)

Yes we've already established I have issues - lol

27
Thanks boys - I've never been a big iron sight guy the idea of the safari is cool. The little vx3 scope is 14x sharp duplex goes well with the rifle.

Your tempting me oscar that would look cool - i have a ruger 1 257 custom that has that red pad you mention on some deep wood - it's really cool. I'm crazy enough to do it - :)

Mulie my only couple of expriences with swaps have been a mark v 300 to 7stw at bartlien that was a 30" heavy CT about $800 out the door shipped back to me turnkey deal.

Another was pac-nor ruger 1 ran about the same with the blue finish. Both scenarios I had more affordable and more expensive options seems like.

This particular rifle was done by someone else, my guess it wasn't cheap with sights and finish - just depends on what all your looking for. Many of them have websites you can go on surf and ask questions - several others the two i mentioned I would recommend, customer service was easy to deal with. Looking to have one of my southpaw rifles taken to a 220 swift, prob do that in the off season i've discussed with pac-nor. Like anything else the most customized you get it the more it will run. Just a vanilla SS barrel with standard twists aren't going to be terrible. Someone else may chime in, that's just my experiences.

If i can get her up our season begins this weekend I have a solid 8 that's been coming into our field area my prefered location I'd love to see her take him with this rifle. Heavy little recoil, gets the cool factor for hunting IMO only reason I grabbed it - like I needed another 257. What the heck only live once right;

Mike i hear ya i was same way with scirocco's which the point of impact is like a half inch lower than these. That's a fine idea oscar, will debate that option for post season!

Here's some pics;
