Rifles / Re: New Weatherby 307.
« on: June 02, 2023, 02:30:33 PM »
The problem with sites like these is being exhibited here. We have the Weatherby-Can-Do-No-Wrong people versus the Weatherby-Can-Do-No-Right crowd. Now that I’m older and more successful in my career, I can afford more. I own more than a few Weatherby rifles and I plan to own more, God willing. Honestly, I love their rifles and proprietary cartridges; however, I hate the new 307. Honestly, a two-lug action designed to accept Remington 700 stocks seems like something that was introduced over 50 years ago. Nothing wrong with that, but I own several of those old rifles also, and they’re called Remington.

I also hate robo-stocks and magazines that hang down so far that they aren’t conducive to or needed for hunting. Also, the bolt looks cheap, like it’s from a $300 rifle.

But this is just me. We all need to understand that gun companies survive by offering new products. And apparently, the younger crowd seems to like rifles created by breeding a bolt action with an AR. So I don’t blame Weatherby for creating the 307.

In summary, I absolutely hate this rifle, but I love the fact that a good rifle company is willing to invest in new products.

Now, to you Adam Weatherby, for the old guys who have the money to spend, throw us a bone. Offer us a mini Mark V in .224 and some decent ammunition for it. Or other classic things. My guess is that it won’t happen, which is okay. I’ll just spend my money elsewhere.

Rifles / What’s the next RPM Chambering
« on: May 01, 2023, 04:59:04 PM »
Just before Weatherby let us know that the .338 RPM was about to hit the market, Adam mentioned on a post on this site that there was another RPM in the pipeline. Any guesses on what it might be?

txaggie - thank you for the detailed info. I live and hunt up in the panhandle. Our deer run bout 160 - 190 pounds with an occasional one over 200. Sounds like the sciroccos will be perfect.

Grouchy, if it doesn’t expand at 50 yards, it won’t expand at longer distances when the velocity is lower.

Have any of you used the scirocco in .257 Weatherby for deer or pigs? I know the scirocco bullet is very strong. Does it expand well?

They show them like their available but if you select the .338 RPM in any of the Backcountry 2.0 series rifles, you can’t order one. The only option is “notify me when available”.

Well it’s not the recoil issue. YouTube has multiple videos by Weatherby of people (including Adam, his wife, and son) using the Backcountry rifles in .338 RPM. The RPM line was designed specifically for the lightest Weatherby rifles. That’s what’s got me stumped that the .338 RPM is being supplied first in their heaviest rifle.

Rifles / .338 RPM Rifles

The new .338 RPM is out now. Various ammunition options are available. However, the only rifles available are Accumarks. I guess I missed something. The RPM cartridges were advertised as the most power you could get from the very light 6-lug Backcountry rifles in a standard length action. So why are the first rifles to be offered in the heavier Accumark?

Rifles / Re: 240 Weatherby Magnum
« on: August 10, 2022, 06:16:48 PM »
I’ve used a .240 on blackbuck antelope, pronghorn antelope, and whitetails. It kills with more authority using a little 100-grain bullet than would commonly be expected. The trick is: use well-constructed bullets because it is significantly faster than the .243 and 6mm. I personally wouldn’t use it on anything larger than deer, simply because larger rounds break bones more reliably and leave larger holes with complete pass-throughs that result in easier to follow blood trails. But for you guys (and girls) who have more experience than I do on the really big stuff, I have no doubt that the .240 is quite effective in your hands. However, why would you want to be limited to just one Weatherby rifle? Weatherby offers 16 different cartridge options; why limit yourself to just one… or two… or…?

You have the coolest little hunting buddy sitting on your four-wheeler.

Clearly, Adam is correct. Who (in his right mind) can question the technology used in the new Backcountry rifles in 6.5 RPM. If anyone questions that, they should start their own company. But, Adam, I want a .338 RPM. Please allow that to happen before I’m too old or dead before it’s available.

I own a 6.5 RPM and have used it on whitetails and pigs. I love it. But, Adam Weatherby, you don’t get to state, “… the 338 RPM (near 338 Win mag velocities) is the same for its respective class.” Without a single rifle or cartridge available yet, the .338 RPM isn’t in ANY class. Every currently available cartridge is better than one that only exists on paper.

Rifles / Re: What do you think the new wby round is
« on: December 22, 2021, 10:38:45 AM »
Hey guys,

Truth be told, I would of launched a new cartridge last year if it weren't for the all time high demand and supply chain shortages.  The bottom line is that our backlog of ammunition is so high that I need to service our customers with ammo for their existing Weatherby rifles first.  If I launch a new cartridge it will eat into brass production capacity of existing cartridges.  There are many customers out there who need ammo for their rifles and so my priority is to get closer to caught up on that first.

I hope that makes sense to you all.  I do assure you we have something developed and tested ready to launch when things get more caught up.  Oh, and then one after that too  :)

Adam

So now there are two new cartridges waiting in the que. Without any idea of when they’ll be available, I’m not sure whether that makes me feel better or worse! The entire industry has dragged it’s feet on investing in additional tooling/equipment even after years of record profits. it’s been reported that one large ammunition company has $1,000,000,000 in backlogged orders. Yeah, that’s the correct number of zeros. One BILLION dollars. If that’s not enough to trigger their management to invest in production capability, I don’t know what is. COVID, political divisiveness, and more than 10 million new gun owners will have long-lasting effects which will guarantee very high demand for a long time. None of these companies were founded or grew larger under such bright future prospects for sales. This is why I fear that the industry as a whole will never “get closer to caught up” on ammunition production. With all this said, I think Adam Weatherby has done more to bring Weatherby into the modern era than any other rifle/ammunition company in the world. So maybe we can be hopeful that we’ll see at least one of these new cartridges in a few months. If a year rolls around and nothing has changed, I’ll look at other options for a rifle that I don’t need.

I love each of the picks that everyone has posted but here is what I think. The big stuff (based on .378 case) wouldn’t sell enough to justify the expense. Those who stated that Weatherby didn’t invest in the 6.5 RPM just to offer one choice in the RPM line are on the right track. Think about it. The RPM case is a first for Weatherby - a totally new design that has nothing in common with their traditional cartridges. They didn’t do that just so they could offer one non-characteristic cartridge in their line. So if it’s on the RPM line, what caliber will it be? As much as I like 8mm, they don’t sell well in this country. Since their 7mm isn’t a hot seller, I can’t see them choosing that one either, at least not now. The .338 market also isn’t a huge seller. They offered 6.5 first, ostensibly because the market for 6.5’s is hot now. The .270 is popular and the new 6.8 Westerner is evidence that their is a belief that new .270 cartridges would sell. However, a .270 RPM would be only slightly larger than the 6.5 RPM. The last thing they need is a new RPM offering that would compete so closely with their existing one. I think it’s a .30 RPM. Since the 6.5 RPM is more powerful that the .264 Winchester Magnum, it makes sense that a .30 RPM would be close to (or better than) the .300 Winchester Magnum. Only it would be in a very light, 6-lug rifle. And .30 caliber has always been an American favorite. Whatever it is, I want one!
