Vanguard bolt cocking piece issue
« on: November 17, 2025, 10:37:32 PM »
Hi, I just acquired a new Weatherby Vanguard Obsidian and took it to the range to zero the scope I mounted on it.

I notice that when I open the bolt and slide it to the rear the cocking piece has a flat tail or "tang" that juts out...when the bolt is slid forward this "tang" is in a track.

My issue is that this "tang" is sharp...at least the corners are, and since it sticks out past the rear end of the bolt when the bolt is opened. I found that I kept snagging the knuckle of my thumb on one of the "tang's" corners. I didn't think anything of it at first, but when a few moments after I noticed my hand was covered in blood from where the corner of the cocking piece tab made contact.

Has anyone experienced this problem, and/or have any recommendations for a solution? Would it be alright to file the corners of the tang round?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would be checking with Weatherby before making any changes that could void the warantee. Welcome to the nation.

The way you describe this, I believe you’re referring to the cocking indicator. It projects under the bolt shroud when the bolt is cocked for a visual indication. It’s part of the firing pin.

When the trigger releases, the firing pin and integral indicator move forward and strike the cartridge primer. At this point the cocking indicator is well under the bolt shroud. It would not be possible to make finger contact with it under recoil. I just checked this on a couple of my Vanguards. The Mark V action has the same feature. Not sure what you have going on there.

Good luck.

To answer the question about filing edges; that wouldn’t hurt anything if done judiciously. It just may not look real pleasant. Probably affect warranty.

Hopefully everything works out for you.
