PARA45 - you have compelled me to respond here, normally I enjoy reading the posts of much more experienced people than myself when it comes to firearms and hunting, and anything that folk see fit to talk about, but here goes..........................
I and my wife, came to be PCS'd to live in this country initially in 2004 at MCAS Cherry Point from the UK. I was serving in the Royal Air Force and was selected to act as engineering liaison between the USMC and RAF on the AV8B/Harrier. Working with Marines and engineers exchanging flight safety, tehcnical and operational information to benefit everybody certainly opened my eyes to how the real America and its people really are. Needless to say we were heart broken when our time to leave came and we thought we had left behind many new friends who we considered as important as our own families. We always dreamed of coming back some day and being able to continue to enjoy life with these wonderful people.
So after retiring from the British Military in 2009 after serving for 32 years a miracle occurred. I am offered a short term contract to support the AV8B again, meaning a move back to Cherry Point which occured after the immigration hurdles were overcome in late 2009. Since then the company I work for has sponsered me and my wife for permanent residency which was gained in 2013 and in another 3 years we can apply for (and hopefully) become US citizens, which is our ultimate intention. We are certainly trying to embrace the way of life here that is for sure.
This whole process has been very long and complicated, with many sleepless nights along the way, but with hard work and the support and dedication of some awesome people (far too many to mention) we are very close to our dream. We feel like we have won the life lotto and are very blessed to have the opportunity to support and in some small way contrubute to keep the free world that way!!
Your post about people not holding their hand on their hearts during the National Anthem and reciting the Oath makes my blood boil and reminds me of something that happened not too long ago. it is the total opposite - my wife and I were at a rodeo here in ENC a few years back and the opening of the show had riders come into the arena flying the flags of all the armed forces and the Stars and Stripes while the National Anthem was booming out on the audio system - we turned to each other and both of us had tears rolling down our cheeks, we were standing proudly among the crowd and as far as I could see, through my tears, every body was standing with hand on heart and singing just as loudly as they could. We had this strange feeling right there and then our destiny was to be here for the foreseeable future.
So there we are - I suppose what I am trying to say is that, just like you PARA45 I have very strong feelings too about this kind of disrespect, especially knowing how hard it is (for some of us who try to do it the right way) to become US citizens.
