Lots of things can cause hearing loss. a high fever is one of the worst things you could have had as a child. think measles or mumps. A severe infection also.
Since I was one of the biggest guys in my unit I got to carry an M60 for several years, trained on mortars and 90mm recoilless rifles only hearing protection was the filters off cigarettes.
Driving trucks with windows down and air blowing in your left ear really causes a lot of trouble and the left ear seems to always have the most loss.
Tinnitus is a brain thing along with all hearing loss and there is no cure for any of it.
I have an MRI scheduled to see if I have any sist on my brain that could be causing some of it, if they are bad enough they could be removed.

Anyone with Tinnitus knows how deafening silence can be.I shot a 30-06 like most kids shoot a 22 when I was young and many a round from 22 Hornet to 257 magnum from benches with the occasional 7mm Rem mag,300 Win and Weatherby that friends wanted me to shoot.

As of now I can lay my head down on the pillow and be asleep in seconds.Scared to death that there may come a day that the Tinnitus is so bad that I can't sleep. Many a person has taken their own life because of it.Hope and pray that I do not succumb to it.
Retirement; The art of doing very little, very slowly

Expert; Someone who knows so much about so little

Damaged or cut paper insulated ( not color coded) telco cable meant having to hear tone sent to identify the pairs of wire from both ends. That meant being able to shut out all other noises. That ability may have saved my hearing The worst background noise was next to the unloading of cars from trains onto trucks with all the noise from chaining them on the trucks.  ;D

One byproduct of hearing loss is the ability to drop off to sleep in a moment and to continue to sleep when others are awakened by incidental noises. Not really a good trade off.

Many Years ago while on active duty I learned to block out noise and could fall asleep standing up in formation but could hear everything that was going on around me. some of the guys thought I had a sixth sense and would catch them trying to take my cigarettes out of my pocket, all most broken a couple the guys hands when they tried to pick my pocket. Had a nurse walk up and lay a hand on my shoulder and almost hit her in the face, I apologized to her and asked her to get my attention before she touched me so I wouldn't hurt her. The word got around quickly and people would walk around me in a wide circle when I was asleep. I can still hear odd noises or a noise that is unusual to where I'm at, like a twig snap or a leaf rustling in the woods or an acorn hit the ground. My hearing loss is in the range of the human voice and especially high-pitched women's voices.
These hearing aids allow me to hear those high frequencies and believe it or not they make the tinnitus softer.
