22-250 Rem Barrel Lengths

Anyone have info on these shorter length heavy barrel varmint guns.  I was looking at a Vanguard 22-250 Heavy Barrel SubMOA rifle.  Will there be a sacrifice in accuracy and velocity with it having a 22 inch barrel versus a Model 700 with a 26 inch heavy barrel.

Your going to loose some velocity for sure. Accuracy won't suffer because of barrel length. In fact a shorter stiffer barrel should tend to be more accurate as long as the rest of the rifle is set up correctly. With a 22 inch barrel you will see a ball of fire in the scope everytime you touch it off. It's pretty impressive at dusk.

How far you looking to shoot? coyotes?

That camo vanguard is pretty sweet looking.

You may consider the .223rem if you want coyotes under 300yds, and 22" is plenty for that.

If you're looking to shoot 500yds or more, I'd say get the 26" barrel to get everything out of that cartridge, otherwise you're making it closer to a .223rem so why not just get a .223rem.

Also quieter...may consider a semi auto for the coyotes....if you get multiples coming in to a call etc...it'll pay dividends, an ar15 in 204, 223, etc...

I would think with the Superformance powder or ammo you wouldn't give up much. It was developed for the shorter barrel rifles. I'd contact Hornady and see what they say. Nice rifle by the way.

Thanks guys, it will be for paper punching, mostly.  I had a 22-250 and sold it a while back. It was a 700 SPS and the quality of the stock and finishes were horrible.  I wanted another one so I thought I'd just do in a Wby rifle.  I will hand load with 50 gr bullets and be happy with 3200'ish FPS.  Most of my 'yote shooting happens by accident when I'm deer hunting,... so I wind up whacking them with 270 wins or wsm's.  They tend to give it up the spot when a 130gr head peals through them.  I'd like a rifle that will shoot cloverleafs at 100 yds, I don't want to go broke doing it either.  Since I used to have one, I know what they are capable of in longer barrels.  I have boxes of spent brass that still have a bunch of loadings left in them before they get chucked.

If it's just for paper, and you want the most accuracy, I'd sure consider the heavier barrel contour of the varmint model, if you can swing the price of entry.  A Sub-MOA Varmint in 22-250 would be a stellar range gun, I suspect.

I think I'm gonna head in that direction.  One of the guys from the hunting club wants to buy an older 700 from me.  It will get me most of the way for the SubMOA Varmint.  Who knows, I might consider using as a varmint rifle too,

I just read a post on Midway's website from a guy in Texas who uses 22-250 for whitetails.  Says that the Fed Primium with a Barnes TSX deops deer within 15 yards.

One of the guys in my hunting lease uses one, too.  But he loses deer on occasion, and he calls 150yds a long shot!  I think they're marginal, and will do the job, if everything is perfect.  If you hit the shoulder, you risk not getting the deer.  If you want a dual-duty gun, move up to the 243Win.  I've got one that's never lost a deer, and that's at least 25-30 deer in front of my dad, brother, and myself over the years.

I wouldn't use it for deer, I'm a 270 guy (wsm and win).  I just thought it was interesting to use it for that.  25-06 or 243 would be about as low as I would go for whitetails.
