I bought a .378 MK5 and modified it a bit, added a synthetic stock, custom made open sights and recknagel twist off mounts with a 3 x 10 leupold Vari X 3 to take to Africa, had never hunted with a 378 before. What an awesome cartridge, it drops african animals at 400 yards as if they had a heart attack. Shot a lion my guides figured was 330 kg to 335 kg which is 725 lbs on the light side, he never left his bed. I would not say the recoil is excessive but it takes concentration to master. I am taking this rifle back to Kodiak island with me next year for grizzly (never got drawn the first try but went for the tour anyhow). I was told the gun would be destroyed of rust by the end of the trip but every night used oil cloth and bore snake to prevent the rust, the gun still looks brand new. I can't say enough about how it preforms, flat shooting and performance with the barnes 250 TTSX bullets is outstanding. That poor kodiak might as well just surrender - more power than I need but comforting to know as well. I own a 340 accumark that would easily do the job but the 378 has the edge for me.
