given a 24 inch barrel of a vanguard how much speed would you loose over a 26 inch barrel of the mark v?
GARY

None. The only thing the extra two inches get you is the potential to possibly stabilize a slightly heavier bullet.
WOW. The extra 2 inches WILL get you more speed with the 26 inch barrel vs the 24. Attached is a link to the Weatherby FAQ page.http://www.weatherby.com/support/faqs.html?SID=6p4q2d5bi333iguhs2vdlavga5

I just happen to have 2 300 Wby's. One has a 24" barrel and the other has a 26" barrel. According to my LabRadar, the difference in velocities is not enough to have any effect on the terminal performance of the rifle. Once you get beyond 175g bullets, the 26" does shoot slightly smaller groups at 300 yards. With 150g bullets, there is no difference.

I think in this case, the Weatherby unofficial moniker of being bigger, better and faster is probably the biggest reason that they go with the 26" barrel. Just my opinion based on real world testing.
I also just happen to have a 26 and 24 inch in 300 Weatherby. ;D As well as 26 and 24 257s. In my real world experiences the 26 inch barrels are always faster.So I don't think Weatherbys data is not true.

That's interesting. What are you using to measure the Velocity with?

They are both good Chrono's. It could be that the bullet isn't gaining but instead it's not loosing because it's more stable leaving the barrel. The other thing that could be making the difference, (or in this case, lack of difference), with my two rifles is that I blueprinted the receiver and bolt on my 24" and the 26" is bone stock.

I think the question you should be asking is "at what distance can I confidently hold my rifle steady enough and place the projectile where it needs to be" As I'm sure the .240 and that projectile will work at most ranges.

i was interested in the humain killing power that can kill the white tail deer.example say a partion 100 grain bullet has energy to kill a deer at 500 yards but at 600 you will not so to speak

If you are worried about a rifle's killing power at 500 plus yards I would say that you should work on improving your stalking/hunting skills

velocity and energy from wby site;

effective killing "power" has many other variables that come into play. Premium bullets need enough of the above stated to expand, shooting a TTSX or Partition round into something that's beginning to travel well under 1200-1000 FPS might prove to be a long day tracking and maybe end up in a wounded unrecoverable animal. Many other considerations when taking shots over 500 yards - the list goes on and on.

If your goal is to be a "longer" range hunter - the market probably has better options that would also indicate you probably want to spend extra on the setup of rifle and optics.

Most modern calibers have an effective range for medium sized game that exceeds it's users ability.

Speaking from experience, I know they will drop them at a 1/4 mile.
