WN,
as i work through my used but new to me MkV deluxe in 340, i've been nothing but impressed with the fit, finish, and craftsmanship. wow. of course you all know this already. almost makes me want to pickup another one, but which one? the quintessential 300 Wby is just too close to the 340. smaller? mmmm i like the 9 lug action. what about the new 6.5-300 Wby? it's enough different from the 340. the 6.5mm bullets exhibit some very high BC's for their mass.
however the 340 can hunt just about anything in N.A. probably fine even for outsized coastal ursus arctos, though some probably have had experiences that tell them no such thing as too big. and of course the 340 isn't normally considered for prairie dogs, but it should do just fine on all big game. that's the problem with such a versatile caliber, how can you justify another for big game? i see that Wby makes MkV even in standard calibers, and an ultra light. however in an ultralight, i'm thinking modest caliber for moderating the recoil somewhat. so for those of you that have a MkV and have used it successfully on all the big game you hunt, how would you go about picking another one? i think i've been bitten.....
thanks,
