I'm a die hard 240 fan,but If I could just have one I'd go 25-06

What is your primary rifle caliber now? Why not just step on up to the 257 Weatherby?

I have both and if I could only own one I would go with the 25-06. Simply because you can use projectiles all the way up to 120 grains in it for larger critters. But the .240 tops out at 105 grains.
As Roger asked, What is your primary caliber now? If it is larger than 25-06 the I would drop down and get the .240 wby.

Either will work great for whitetails at 300-400 yards. But since I bought a 257 Roy the 25-06 has remained in the safe while deer hunting.

Just read an article about necking down a 6.5 Creedmore to a 25. Basically it would be a 25-08 I guess. Guns and Ammo Precision Rifle Shooter magazine has an article on it. Good reading mag by the way. I just came across it the other day and subscribed.

The article said that but I had never heard of it. I find myself almost in awe at how many variations of the .308 there have been.

Even after all the talk here I'd still go 25-06.Ammo is plentiful and not expensive.

+1 for the 25-06 (anything higher than the 6.5 Swede will have a bit more recoil)                    240Wby/17.9 recoil

Higher velocities and power can be achieved if handloading your own ammo, for a specific rifle, than what Danno50 has posted above.3230fps for a 100 grain is a mild load.
