Well I guess this year I'm using a 6.5-300 for elk.

I had a 25-06 years ago. If you go with the .257 you will not be sorry you did

Crazy thing about the ballistics of the 6.5.. Give it enough powder and it will do just about anything you want it to. The 6.5-300 shoots flat, uphill and downhill and will do it over some huge distances. You still have to be mindful of the energy and velocity that you need to open a wound channel that doesn't close up or you'll be tracking a wounded animal but as long as you do that, an Elk is easily within it's capabilities. Zero it at 300 yards, don't mess with your scope and just use holdover or hold under. An Elk's hide is pretty thick so stick with the A-Max bullets.

I used my 6.5 creedmoor  the last couple years for elk worked great . It dropped every animal on the spot . Just wanted something new this year . Got my 6.5-300 all sighted in and took it out to 900 yards yesterday  shot great.

For me anything over 300 yards for me is pretty much out of range. I know I have several rifles that will kill well beyond that but I have a hard time shooting at animals at long distances. I killed one deer at barely over 200 yards and that was long range cause I was using a muzzleloader. I have had many opportunities to shoot deer that far away but something always tells me no, even though I have shot crows and coyotes at distances much longer than 300. I do usually zero for 200 yards so if a 300 yard shot comes and I do want to take it I just have to hold a few inches high.

if you hand load get the 257!!! the 25-06 is great but it doesn't hold a candle. I felt the same way until I got the roy and have never looked back.
a 1/2" group is good enough for the girls I go with!

Hey Redneck, did you have any luck with the 6.5-300 in elk?  I have the same rifle and have killed 2 whitetail with it.   Shoots lights out  with 127LRX.  Debating taking on elk DIY this fall.  Anybody else use this round on elk?

go for it, I would have no problems using the 6.5-300 with the 127 gr LRX load for elk at reasonable ranges. We've used the 130 gr TTSX load in the 270 Wby on elk with great results, and it's not much different than the 127 gr load in the 6.5-300.
