Picked up a Old Vanguard

Picked up a Old Vanguard

I picked up my 2nd Weatherby recently. I think it’s a pretty old Vanguard. It’s a V1 serial. It’s in a 300 win mag with a plastic stock. I picked it with a complete reloading kit down to powders (dies for it) for $600. It’s in very good shape, just friend wanting some money for a deer mount. I’ve shot it and it has a great brake on it. It’s a little less recoil than my .308.

Any ideas on how old she might be?

I’m not really feeling the stock. Any alternatives? I notice Weatherby sells on in their store. Pretty much what I have not? I really like my Grayboe stock on my 700.

I don't believe that is a muzzle brake from Weatherby, and according to the Weatherby book production seems like 1970-1984.

+1, I've never seen a factory brake like that. If you shot it and it's accurate I'd leave it alone. Otherwise you might stick a lot of money in it if you have to have someone fit a new stock to it. You can always have weatherby do a search of the serial number if you want an exact date, it'd be easier finding an aftermarket stock then.

Well I emailed Weatherby. They put it at a born on of Oct/Nov of 1973. I asked them about a stock. The stock is missing a sling mount on the stock side. I’ve found those hard to repair. He needed the length of the barrel to help with a stock. I sent him pictures of the brake. I assume it started as a 26”/#2 contour before it had the brake installed.
