I'm wondering if this is a Weatherby made magazine or did Weatherby go to an outside source and buy from a low bid contractor? If they used a low bid supplier, that's exactly what they got, LOW BID. Weatherby needs to start building their own mags to properly fit their rifle and send the upgraded mags to all buyers of that rifle. That's the only way they will regain respect from customers. Own up to the mistake, correct it, problem solved. You don't want to start down a road of second rate products. If you do you might as well change your name to Remington.

Yes this is an out sourced magazine and bottom metal kit. I can't remember the name of the company that made them either. The bloke I spoke to from the Australian importers, who incidentally was a great help and I cannot fault him one bit, said he had 8 of these detach mag kits on his rifles (not Weatherbys) and they are all a lose fit like this.
I still can't believe that it should be this lose. I am going to send it back so they can check it over anyways.

I sure am glad my $299 T/C Compass rifles don't rattle and both are sub moa. Sorry to hear you are stuck, BB340!

On I am not stuck mate. If I don't want the thing then I will just send it back! But truth be known I do actually like the rifle. I showed it to my gun smith yesterday and he thinks we can fix the ill fitting magazine by putting some shims in place. Granted I should not have to do this on a supposedly custom rifle costing what it did! The other reason is I am the only one in OZ that has one. Yes I am that vain haha.

Brett, I am sorry to read of your troubles with this situation and very surprised Weatherby, of all gun makers, would let these out the door. We buy their products for quality/precise function as much as accuracy and this just doesn't fit the bill. Based on what you have described, Weatherby should recall this model and retrofit with proper fitting magazines (or scrap the model and give credit towards something else). We all know a magazine does NOT have to fit like a hotdog down a hallway to function well (in fact, the more precisely and consistently the magazine positions on insertion, the better). I hope this is not the future of the other rifles. Perhaps the best design engineers didn't make the move last year? Hope that's not the case.

They do not make this model anymore. They only made 18 of them I believe. But I have not heard any reports of anyone else complaining about the magazine. Could mine be a one off and it is indeed not meant to be this bad? I do not know. I will be returning it for their gun smith to look at it.

Danno50 you're right, if people knew the magazine rattles that bad and it was made that way they wouldn't have sold any of those rifles especially at that price.  To design a magazine for a hunting rifle like that is totally stupid, there's no other way to say it.  Heck a magazine on an AK doesn't rattle that bad and they're made to be used and abused.  The other thing that's for sure is Roy and Ed wouldn't have left such a terrible design be put on a rifle that has their name on it.  Ultimately this terrible design decision falls on Adam's desk because he's the boss and should've known these magazines rattle like that and let it be put on a rifle that bears his family's name.  Weatherby was always know as the epitome of quality, the Rolls-Royce of firearms, but the quality on that is non-existent.  The only way to make that right is to take off the magazine assembly, throw it in the garbage, and put a trigger guard and floor plate on it.

You are spot on in all of that Chris. It should never have been built so badly. Ultimately I will be having a nice timber stock and hinged floorplate for it. I don't when that will happen as I have several other custom jobs being done at the moment, but it will happen.

For the price you paid for it Weatherby should be the ones footing the bill to make it right.  Like you said for the price of it that's totally unacceptable.  Yeah it's nice being the only guy to have something but if that something is way over priced for the sub-par-quality what's the use?

With the total lack of comment from Weatherby, it might be a snowy day in hell before I consider spending my hard earned money on a CRAP shoot!

OK guys. Let's calm down a bit.  This is way out of hand.  One guy has one rifle with one magazine issue and now the whole Weatherby company has gone down the drain and everything coming out of Wyoming is a piece of junk?

First off, we will ALWAYS do our best to make things right.  BB340, I appreciate your comments about our distributor down there.  They are good "mates" and I have confidence they will take care of you.  You have my assurance we will make things right.  So sorry you aren't pleased with the end product.  I certainly want you to be satisfied.  You have always been a loyal customer and we will do our best to keep it that way.

As far as the magazine, this has been outsourced for years, back when dad was running the company in CA.  It isn't "new" and doesn't have to do with Wyoming or the current team here.  In fact, 100% of my gunsmithing team moved from CA and so they have a ton of Weatherby experience.  They are putting out some AMAZING guns. So, this has absolutely nothing to do with our move or current leadership.  That magazine was originally designed for the Tacmark which many of you may recall.  We will take this feedback into consideration, as we do all customer feedback.  Additionally, we will make sure the owner is satisfied.

Now, let's all take a chill pill and get back to a more positive Weatherby Nation that we all enjoy.

Thanks for coming on board Adam. Now I am the one with this rifle and I am sorry to all my Nation mates but I do tend to agree with Adam. Sure I have expressed my dislike and disappointment in this rifle. I am amazed that they did make this rifle. Am I angry about receiving a rifle that cost this much and it not be up to scratch? The answer is an honest NO. As I said before I am more disappointed than anything. I do believe that it should never have been made this way. But I know Weatherby will help me come to a solution. I sure as heck am not going to stop buying Weatherby rifles just because of this. I like the rifle. It is something different that very few people have. Once this mag dilemma is sorted it'll be a great piece of kit.

Brett I'm glad you're happy with Weatherby's response and promise to make it right.  You obviously either have a lot more money than some of us or are far more forgiving either way I commend you on your patients and understanding.  I however work hard for my money and for me to shell out that kind of money for a rifle that's sub-par quality would have me livid.  I do give Adam credit for trying to down play the issue however the fact remains it's not to the Weatherby standard we all know and come to expect so regardless of if it's, "One guy has one rifle with one magazine issue" or numerous guys with numerous guns someone dropped the ball big time.  If I was the guy who bought it you can be sure my thought would be it's one too many regardless of how many rifles came out that way.  It shouldn't have happened and quality control should've caught it.  Who knows maybe that inspector was gone to lunch when it came through or was taking a nap.  Whatever the cause was it happened and obviously they're going to make it right but it's definitely a black eye for the company.  Things like this is exactly why I never ever buy a gun without seeing it if if it's factory new.

Well Chris I sure don't think I have more money than the rest of you. In fact I would dare say I have to work even harder for my money. Yes you are dead right I am very forgiving and have the patience of a saint. There are far greater things in life to worry about without getting worked up over a rifle. If you read back through all my posts on here you will discover I never take the angry approach. Does that mean I will let them lump me with a rifle I am not happy with? Hell no! But instead of getting all worked up and jump up and down and screaming "Fix It!" I prefer to stay calm and work with those involved to come to a favourable outcome. If I am not happy with the resolution they provide then that is when I take the next step, but I remain calm and collected whilst doing it. I have employed this way of getting things done my whole life and let me tell you it is much better for ones health than getting angry.

Well BB, this seems to be going in the right direction.  I hope this rifle gets fixed to your satisfaction, and I hope now that Adam is involved, that he has a serious talk with their Quality Control section to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Adam, When this mag was used in the Tacmark was it a loose fit like the one in question here? The back and forth play in this mag could cause feeding problems if the bottom of the mag is in the rearward most position while feeding the next round. It could cause the bullet to not line up correctly with the ramp, causing a lockup.

It's very encouraging that Adam is involved (thank you, Adam). Brett, I feel confident that your situation will be properly remedied. It's also great to know that all the seasoned gunsmith guys made the move and the company is not having to work with green ones. Although I said earlier I'm not sure how these rifles made it out, honestly, every company has an issue occasionally, so I second the notion of letting Weatherby do their thing and get it right. They have never dropped the ball on making things right to the best of my knowledge and I am familiar with Weatherbys for nearly half a century. Adam, I think some of the reason for all the attention on this, is we are spoiled by Weatherby rifles being such a great product, so an issue such as this is sort of a head scratcher.
